4. ✧ Prayer

    إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ أَتَى عَلَى مُعَاذٍ ؓ وَهُوَ فِي نَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُعَاذُ، مَا قِوَامُ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ ؟ قَالَ: « الْإِخْلَاصُ، وَهِيَ الْفِطْرَةُ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَهِيَ الْمِلَّةُ، وَالطَّاعَةُ

    ✧ 'Umar ؓ came to Mu'adh ؓ while he was among some of his companions and said: 'O Mu'adh, what is the foundation of this matter?' He said: 'Sincerity, which is the natural disposition; prayer, which is the religion; and obedience.'

    إِنَّ أَبَا ذَرٍّ ؓ جَلَسَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ مِثْلَ حَدِيثٍ قَبْلَهُ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَمَا الصَّلَاةُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « خَيْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَقَلَّ مِنْهُ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَكْثَرَ

    ✧ Abu Dharr ؓ sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned a hadith similar to the one before it. He said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is prayer?' He ﷺ said: 'A good placed before you; whoever wishes may do less of it, and whoever wishes may do more.'

    « أَوَّلُ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ طُهُورُهُ، فَإِنْ أَحْسَنَ طُهُورَهُ فَصَلَاتُهُ كَنَحْوِ طُهُورِهِ، ثُمَّ يُحَاسَبُ بِصَلَاتِهِ، فَإِنْ حَسُنَتْ صَلَاتُهُ فَسَائِرُ عَمَلِهِ كَنَحْوٍ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ

    ✧ The first thing for which a servant will be brought to account is his purification. If he perfects his purification, then his prayer will be similar to his purification. Then he will be brought to account for his prayer. If his prayer is good, then the rest of his deeds will be similar to his prayer.

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا قَرَأَ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ سَرَقَ آخِرَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِذَا قَرَأَ أَوَّلَهُ حَجَزَهُ آخِرُهُ أَنْ يَسْرِقَ بِغَلَسٍ

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'What do you think of a man who recites at the beginning of the night and then steals at its end?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When he recites at its beginning, its end prevents him from stealing in the dark.'

    خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جِنَازَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، وَفِيهِ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « يَا عُمَرُ إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْأَلُ عَنْ أَعْمَالِ النَّاسِ، وَلَكِنْ تُسْأَلُونَ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out for the funeral of a man from the Ansar, and he mentioned the hadith, in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O 'Umar, you will not be asked about the deeds of people, but you will be asked about prayer.'

    « أَوَّلُ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ صَلَاتُهُ، يَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ: انْظُرُوا إِلَى صَلَاةِ عَبْدِي، فَإِنْ وَجَدُوهَا كَامِلَةً كُتِبَتْ لَهُ كَامِلَةً، وَإِنْ وَجَدُوهَا انْتُقِصَ مِنْهَا شَيْءٌ قَالَ: انْظُرُوا هَلْ تَجِدُونَ لِعَبْدِي تَطَوُّعًا، فَتُكْمَلُ صَلَاتُهُ مِنْ تَطَوُّعِهِ، ثُمَّ تُؤْخَذُ الْأَعْمَالُ عَلَى قَدْرِ ذَلِكَ

    ✧ The first thing for which a servant will be brought to account is his prayer. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says to the angels: 'Look at My servant's prayer. If you find it complete, it will be recorded as complete. If you find something missing from it, He says: Look and see if My servant has any voluntary prayers, so that his prayer may be completed from his voluntary prayers. Then the rest of his deeds will be taken according to that measure.'

    « إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا افْتَرَضَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى النَّاسِ مِنْ أَمْرِ دِينِهِمُ الصَّلَاةُ، وَآخِرَ مَا يَبْقَى الصَّلَاةُ، وَأَوَّلَ مَا يُحَاسَبُونَ بِهِ الصَّلَاةُ، يَقُولُ: انْظُرُوا فِي صَلَاةِ عَبْدِي »، فَذَكَرَهُ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ: « فَإِنْ وُجِدَ لَهُ تَطَوُّعٌ أُتِمَّتِ الْفَرِيضَةُ مِنَ التَّطَوُّعِ »، ثُمَّ قَالَ: « انْظُرُوا هَلْ زَكَاتُهُ تَامَّةٌ، فَإِنْ وُجِدَتْ زَكَاتُهُ تَامَّةً كُتِبَتْ تَامَّةً، وَإِنْ وُجِدَتْ نَاقِصَةً » قَالَ: « انْظُرُوا هَلْ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ، فَإِنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ تَمَّتْ زَكَاتُهُ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ

    ✧ The first thing Allah Almighty made obligatory upon people in their religion is prayer, and the last thing that remains is prayer, and the first thing they are held accountable for is prayer. He says: 'Look at My servant's prayer.' Then he mentioned it until he said: 'If any voluntary prayer is found for him, the obligatory prayer is completed from the voluntary.' Then he said: 'Look: is his zakat complete? If his zakat is found complete, it is recorded as complete, and if it is found deficient...' He said: 'Look: does he have any charity? If he has, his zakat is completed from the charity.'

    جِئْنَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ ؓ وَنَحْنُ سِتَّةُ نَفَرٍ، سَادِسُنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ جُهَيْنَةَ، وَنَحْنُ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ، فَوَجَدْنَاهُ مُرْتَحِلًا يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ، فَقَالَ: مَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ، مَا جَاءَ بِكُمْ ؟ قَالُوا: جِئْنَا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ، وَنَقْتَبِسُ مِنْكَ، قَالَ ؓ: نَعَمْ، سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسُ، مَنْ لَقِيَ اللهَ تَعَالَى بِهِنَّ لَمْ يَنْقُصْ مِنْهُنَّ شَيْئًا غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ ذُنُوبَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ مِلْءَ الْأَرْضِ »، فَقُلْنَا: فَكَيْفَ لِمَا مَضَى فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ؟ قَالَ: تَمْحُوهُ التُّقَى - مَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْجُهَنِيُّ: أَسَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، أَيَحِلُّ لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَكْذِبَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

    ✧ We came to Abu Dharr ؓ – we were six people, our sixth a man from Juhaynah and we from Aslam – and found him preparing to leave Madinah. He said: 'Welcome to you. What brings you?' They said: 'We came to greet you and to benefit from you.' He ؓ said: 'Yes. I heard Abu al-Qasim ﷺ say: "The five prayers – whoever meets Allah Almighty with them, not having neglected anything of them, Allah will forgive his sins even if they were as much as the fill of the earth."' We said: 'What about what came before in the pre-Islamic era?' He said: 'Piety wipes it out' – twice. The Juhani said to him: 'Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Glory be to Allah! Is it permissible for a man to lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?'

    قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « يَا أَنَسُ، إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ أَبَدًا تُصَلِّي فَإِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ مَا دُمْتَ تُصَلِّي

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'O Anas, if you can always be praying, then do so, for the angels pray for you as long as you pray.'

    « اسْتَقِيمُوا وَلَنْ تُحْصُوا، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ خَيْرَ أَعْمَالِكُمُ الصَّلَاةُ، وَلَا يُحَافِظُ عَلَى الْوُضُوءِ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنٌ

    ✧ "Be steadfast, and you will not be able to fully do so. Know that the best of your deeds is prayer, and no one maintains ablution except a believer."

    قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ: حُبِّبَتْ إِلَيْكَ الصَّلَاةُ فَخُذْ مِنْهَا مَا شِئْتَ

    ✧ Jibril, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: 'Prayer has been made beloved to you, so take from it as much as you wish.'

    « الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسُ، وَالْجُمُعَةُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ كَفَّارَاتٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُنَّ مَا اجْتُنِبَتِ الْكَبَائِرُ

    ✧ The five prayers, and Jumu'ah to Jumu'ah, are expiations for what is between them as long as major sins are avoided.

    « مَثَلُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ كَمَثَلِ نَهَرٍ عَذْبٍ جَارٍ أَوْ غَمْرٍ عَلَى بَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ، يَغْتَسِلُ مِنْهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسَ مَرَّاتٍ، مَا يُبْقِي مِنْ دَرَنِهِ ؟

    ✧ The example of the five prayers is like a sweet flowing river, or an abundant river, at the door of one of you; he bathes in it five times a day. What dirt would remain on him?

    « مَنْ صَلَّى الْغَدَاةَ وَأُصِيبَتْ ذِمَّتُهُ فَقَدِ اسْتُبِيحَ حِمَى اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَخُفِرَتْ ذِمَّتُهُ، فَأَنَا طَالِبٌ بِذِمَّتِهِ

    ✧ Whoever prays the morning prayer and then his protection is violated, the sanctuary of Allah Almighty has been violated and his covenant has been broken, and I will seek retribution for his covenant.

    رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: جَعَلَكَ اللهُ فِي الرَّفِيقِ الْأَعْلَى مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَأَنَا مَعَكَ، قَالَ ﷺ: « آمِينَ » قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلِّمْنِي عَمَلًا صَالِحًا أَعْمَلُهُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « أَقِيمِي الصَّلَاةَ فَإِنَّهَا أَفْضَلُ الْجِهَادِ، وَاهْجُرِي الْمَعَاصِيَ فَإِنَّهَا أَفْضَلُ الْهِجْرَةِ، وَاذْكُرِي اللهَ كَثِيرًا فَإِنَّ أَحَبَّ الْأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَنْ تَلْقِيهِ بِهِ

    ✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: 'May Allah place you in the highest company of Paradise, and me with you.' He ﷺ said: 'Amin.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me a righteous deed to do.' He ﷺ said: 'Establish prayer, for it is the best of jihad, and abandon sins, for that is the best of emigration, and remember Allah much, for the most beloved of deeds to Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is that you meet Him with it.'

    اهْتَمَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْأَذَانِ لِلصَّلَاةِ، وَكَرِهَ أَنْ يَنْقُسَ كَمَا تَصْنَعُ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ، فَكَانَ ﷺ يَبْعَثُ رِجَالًا إِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَيَشْغَلُهُمْ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَرَجَعَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ؓ مُهْتَمًّا بِهَمِّ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأُتِيَ فِي النَّوْمِ، وَقِيلَ: لِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ اهْتَمَمْتَ ؟ قَالَ: لِهَمِّ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ الَّذِي أَتَاهُ: ائْتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَمُرْهُ أَنْ يُؤَذِّنَ بِالصَّلَاةِ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، مَرَّتَيْنِ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، مَرَّتَيْنِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، مَرَّتَيْنِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: اجْعَلْ بَيْنَ الْأَذَانِ وَالْإِقَامَةِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: فَأَتَى عَبْدُ اللهِ ؓ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « عَلِّمْهَا بِلَالًا » وَجَاءَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فَقَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ مَا رَأَى عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَلَكِنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ سَبَقَنِي

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was concerned about the call to prayer, and he disliked using a bell as the people of Makkah did. He ﷺ used to send men when prayer time came, and they would be busy with that instead of prayer. Abdullah b. Zayd al-Ansari ؓ returned, concerned with the Messenger's ﷺ concern, and he was visited in a dream. It was said to him: 'Why are you concerned?' He said: 'Because of the Messenger's ﷺ concern.' The one who came to him said: 'Go to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him to call for prayer: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, twice; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, twice; Hayya 'ala al-salah, twice; Hayya 'ala al-falah, twice; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; La ilaha illa Allah.' Then he said to him: 'Make between the adhan and the iqamah something like that.' He said: Abdullah ؓ went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Teach it to Bilal.' Then Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ came and said: 'I saw the like of what Abdullah b. Zayd saw, but Abdullah preceded me.'

    إِنَّ أَبَا مَحْذُورَةَ ؓ أَذَّنَ الظُّهْرَ، وَعُمَرُ ؓ بِمَكَّةَ، وَرَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ حِينَ زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: يَا أَبَا مَحْذُورَةَ، أَمَا خِفْتَ أَنْ تَنْشَقَّ مُرَيْطَاؤُكَ ؟ قَالَ ؓ: أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُسْمِعَكَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « أَبْرِدُوا بِالصَّلَاةِ إِذَا اشْتَدَّ الْحَرُّ، فَإِنَّ الْحَرَّ مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ تَحَاجَّتْ حَتَّى أَكَلَ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا، فَاسْتَأْذَنَتِ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي نَفَسَيْنِ فَأَذِنَ لَهَا، فَشِدَّةُ الْحَرِّ مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَشِدَّةُ الزَّمْهَرِيرِ مِنْ بَرْدِهَا.

    ✧ Abu Mahdhurah ؓ gave the call for the noon prayer while Umar ؓ was in Makkah, and he raised his voice when the sun had passed its zenith. Umar ؓ said: 'O Abu Mahdhurah, do you not fear that your windpipe will split?' He ؓ said: 'I wanted to make you hear.' Umar ؓ said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Delay the prayer until it is cooler when the heat is intense, for the heat is from the blast of Hell. Hell complained until parts of it consumed other parts, and it asked permission of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, for two breaths, and He permitted it. So the intensity of heat is from the blast of Hell, and the intensity of extreme cold is from its cold."'

    « أَبَرَّدُوا بِالصَّلَاةِ إِذَا اشْتَدَّ الْحُرُّ فَإِنَّ الْحُرَّ مِنْ فَيْح جَهَنَّم وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ تَحَاجَّتْ حَتَّى أَكْل بَعْضِهَا بَعْضًا فَاسْتَأْذَنَتْ الله تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فِي نَفْسَيْنِ فَأَذِنَ لَهَا فَشِدَّة الْحَرِّ مَنْ فَيَّحَ جَهَنَّم وَشَدَّة الزَّمْهَرِير مَنْ بَرَدَهَا" نوع="مرفوع"

    ✧ "Delay the prayer until it is cooler when the heat is intense, for the heat is from the blast of Hell. Hell complained until parts of it consumed other parts, and it asked permission of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, for two breaths, and He permitted it. So the intensity of heat is from the blast of Hell, and the intensity of extreme cold is from its cold." (Marfu')

    أَوَّلُ مَنْ أَذَّنَ فِي السَّمَاءِ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ » فَسَمِعَهُ عُمَرُ، وَبِلَالٌ ؓ، فَأَقْبَلَ عُمَرُ ؓ فَأَخْبَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِمَا سَمِعَ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ بِلَالٌ ؓ فَأَخْبَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِمَا سَمِعَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « سَبَقَكَ عُمَرُ يَا بِلَالُ، أَذِّنْ كَمَا سَمِعْتَ » قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يَضَعَ أُصْبُعَيْهِ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ اسْتِعَانَةً بِهَا عَلَى الصَّوْتِ

    ✧ "The first to give the adhan in the heaven was Jibril ﷺ." Umar and Bilal ؓ heard him. Umar ؓ came and informed the Prophet ﷺ of what he had heard. Then Bilal ؓ came and informed the Prophet ﷺ of what he had heard. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Umar beat you to it, O Bilal. Give the adhan as you heard." He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to place his fingers in his ears to help with the sound.

    كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُؤَذِّنَانِ، أَحَدُهُمَا بِلَالٌ، وَالْآخَرُ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْأَصَمِّ ؓ.

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ had two mu'adhdhins: one of them was Bilal, and the other was Abd al-Aziz b. al-Asamm ؓ.

    قَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَلَّادٍ، ثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بِهِ. [3] رَوَاهُ أَبُو قُرَّةَ الزُّبَيْدِيُّ فِي سُنَنِهِ مِنْ طَرِيقِ مُوسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ بِهِ سَوَاءً، وَزَادَ: وَكَانَ بِلَالٌ ؓ يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ يُوقِظُ النَّائِمَ، وَكَانَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ ؓ يَتَوَخَّى الْفَجْرَ فَلَا يُخْطِئُهُ، وَكَأَنَّ عَبْدَ الْعَزِيزِ بْنَ الْأَصَمِّ ؓ عَلَى هَذَا هُوَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ.:

    ✧ Abu Nu'aym said: Abu Bakr b. Khallad narrated to us, al-Harith narrated to us with it. [3] Abu Qurrah al-Zubaydi narrated it in his Sunan through the path of Musa b.     ✧ When the caller calls to prayer, the gates of heaven are opened and supplication is answered. So whoever is afflicted by distress or hardship, let him wait for the caller. When he says 'Allāhu akbar,' he says 'Allāhu akbar.' When he bears witness, he bears witness. When he says 'Hayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh,' he says 'Hayya ʿalā al-ṣalāh.' When he says 'Hayya ʿalā al-falāḥ,' he says 'Hayya ʿalā al-falāḥ.' Then he says: 'O Allah, Lord of this perfect call, the call of truth that is answered—the call of truth and the word of piety—make us live upon it, cause us to die upon it, and resurrect us upon it. Make us among the best of its people in our living and our dying.' Then he asks Allah for his need.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us and said: 'Whoever undertakes the adhan of one of the mosques of Allah, Exalted be He, seeking thereby the Face of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, Allah, Exalted be He, will grant him the reward of forty thousand thousand prophets, forty thousand thousand truthful ones, and forty thousand thousand martyrs. Forty thousand thousand nations will enter into his intercession, in every nation forty thousand thousand men. He will have in every part of the gardens forty thousand thousand dwellings, in every dwelling forty thousand thousand houses, in every house forty thousand thousand couches, upon every couch a wife from the houris with wide eyes. The expanse of every house among them is the expanse of the world forty thousand thousand times. Before every wife are forty thousand thousand serving girls. In every house are forty thousand thousand tables, upon every table forty thousand thousand large bowls, in every large bowl forty thousand thousand kinds of food. If the two heavy ones (jinn and mankind) were to descend upon it, He would accommodate them in the least house of its houses with whatever they wished of food, drink, clothing, perfume, fruits, and various gifts, curiosities, ornaments and garments. Every house among them is self-sufficient with what it contains of these things, without need of another house. When the mu'adhdhin says, "Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh," seventy thousand thousand angels surround him, all of them sending blessings upon him and seeking forgiveness for him. He is under the shade of the mercy of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, until he finishes, and forty thousand thousand angels record his reward. Then they ascend with it to Allah, Exalted be He.'

    ✧ Ask Allah, Exalted be He, for the Wasilah for me. No believer asks it for me in this world except that I will be a witness for him or an intercessor on the Day of Resurrection.

    أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الصَّلَوَاتِ، قَالَ: فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ بِغَلَسٍ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ بِنَهَارٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْغَدُ انْتَظَرَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ حَتَّى قِيلَ: مَا يَحْبِسُهُ ؟ ثُمَّ صَلَّى، ثُمَّ انْتَظَرَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى قِيلَ: مَا يَحْبِسُهُ ؟ ثُمَّ صَلَّى، ثُمَّ قَالَ ﷺ: « أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ ؟ » قَالَ: هَا أَنَا ذَا، قَالَ ﷺ: « أَشَهِدْتَنَا أَمْسِ ؟ » قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ ﷺ: « وَشَهِدْتَنَا الْيَوْمَ ؟ » قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: « أَيَّ ذَلِكَ أَرَدْتَ فَهُوَ وَقْتٌ، وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَقْتٌ

    ✧ A man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked him about the prayers. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer in the dark, then he prayed the afternoon prayer in daylight. The next day, he waited for the dawn prayer until it was said: “What is keeping him?” Then he prayed. Then he waited for the afternoon prayer until it was said: “What is keeping him?” Then he prayed. Then he ﷺ said: “Where is the questioner?” He said: “Here I am.” He ﷺ said: “Did you witness us yesterday?” He said: “Yes.” He ﷺ said: “And did you witness us today?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Whichever of these you choose is a time, and what is between them is a time.”

    سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ وَقْتِ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « صَلِّهَا مَعِي الْيَوْمَ وَفِي غَدٍ » فَلَمَّا كَانَ بِقَاعِ نَمِرَةَ بِالْجُحْفَةِ صَلَّاهَا حِينَ طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ، حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِذِي طُوًى أَخَّرَهَا، حَتَّى قَالَ النَّاسُ: أَقُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟، فَقَالُوا: لَوْ صَلَّيْنَاهَا، فَخَرَجَ فَصَلَّاهَا أَمَامَ الشَّمْسِ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: « مَاذَا قُلْتُمْ ؟ » قَالُوا: قُلْنَا: لَوْ صَلَّيْنَا، قَالَ ﷺ: « لَوْ فَعَلْتُمْ أَصَابَكُمْ عَذَابٌ »، ثُمَّ دَعَا السَّائِلَ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « الصَّلَاةُ مَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْوَقْتَيْنِ

    ✧ A man asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about the time of the morning prayer. He ﷺ said: “Pray it with me today and tomorrow.” When he was at the plain of Namirah near al-Juhfah, he prayed it when dawn broke. Then when we were at Dhu Tuwa, he delayed it until the people said: “Has the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away?” They said: “If only we had prayed it.” Then he came out and prayed it before the sun. Then he turned to the people and said: “What did you say?” They said: “We said: If only we had prayed.” He ﷺ said: “If you had done that, punishment would have befallen you.” Then he called the questioner and said ﷺ: “The prayer is between these two times.”

    إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ كَتَبَ إِلَى أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ؓ: كَتَبْتُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، وَأَحَقُّ مَا تَعَاهَدَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ أَمْرَ دِينِهِمْ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي، حَفِظْتُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا حَفِظْتُ، وَنَسِيتُ مِنْهُ مَا نَسِيتُ، فَصَلِّ الظُّهْرَ بِالْهَجِيرِ، وَالْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ حَيَّةٌ، وَالْمَغْرِبَ لِفِطْرِ الصَّائِمِ، وَالْعِشَاءَ مَا لَمْ تَخَفْ رُقَادَ النَّاسِ، وَالصُّبْحَ بِغَلَسٍ، وَأَطِلِ الْقِرَاءَةَ فِيهَا

    ✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ wrote to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari ؓ: I am writing about the prayer, and the most worthy thing for Muslims to attend to is the matter of their religion. I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying; I retained from that what I have retained, and I forgot from it what I have forgotten. So pray the noon prayer in the midday heat, the afternoon prayer while the sun is alive, the sunset prayer at the breaking of the fast of the fasting person, the evening prayer as long as you do not fear people's sleeping, and the morning prayer in darkness, and lengthen the recitation in it.

    ✧ Gabriel ﷺ came and prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed with the people when the sun had declined. Then he prayed the afternoon prayer when his shadow was equal to him. Then he prayed the sunset prayer when the sun had set. Then he prayed the evening prayer after that, as if he intended the disappearance of the twilight. Then he prayed the dawn prayer in darkness when dawn broke. Then Gabriel ﷺ came the next day and prayed the noon prayer with the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed the noon prayer with the people when his shadow was equal to him. Then he prayed the afternoon prayer when his shadow became twice his length. Then he prayed the sunset prayer when the sun had set, at the same time. Then he prayed the evening prayer after a portion of the night had passed. Then he prayed the dawn prayer and made it bright.

    سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ؓ، فَقُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الَّتِي كَانَ يَدُومُ عَلَيْهَا، فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ أَخَّرَ وَقَدَّمَ، وَلَكِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ الَّتِي كَانَ يَدُومُ عَلَيْهَا كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا ؟ قَالَ: ( كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي الظُّهْرَ إِذَا زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ الصَّيْفُ أَبْرَدَ بِهَا، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءُ نَقِيَّةٌ، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي الْمَغْرِبَ إِذَا غَابَ قُرْصُ الشَّمْسِ، وَيَنْصَرِفُ وَمَا يُرَى ضَوْءُ [النَّجْمِ]، وَكَانَ يُؤَخِّرُ الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا خَافَ النَّوْمَ قَالَ: « يَا بِلَالُ أَذِّنْ »، وَسَمِعْتُهُ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لَوْلَا أَنْ تَنَامَ أُمَّتِي عَنْهَا لَسَرَّنِي أَنْ أَجْعَلَهَا فِي ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ »، وَكُنَّا نَنْصَرِفُ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ وَنَحْنُ نَرَى ضَوْءَ النُّجُومِ )

    ✧ I asked Anas b. Malik ؓ, saying: Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ that he used to persist in, for it has reached me that he delayed and advanced, but the prayer that he used to persist in is as if I were looking at it. He said: (The Messenger of God ﷺ used to pray the noon prayer when the sun had declined; if it was summer he would cool it down. He used to pray the afternoon prayer while the sun was white and clear. He used to pray the sunset prayer when the disk of the sun had disappeared, and he would leave while the light of the star could not be seen. He used to delay the last evening prayer until, if he feared sleeping, he said: “O Bilal, give the adhan.” And I heard him ﷺ say: “Were it not that my community would sleep through it, it would please me to place it in the third of the night or half the night.” We used to leave the dawn prayer while we could see the light of the stars.)

    ✧ I entered upon Anas b. Malik ؓ and he mentioned the hadith. He said: "Then a slave girl came to him and said: 'Prayer, may Allah keep you well!' He said: 'Which prayer?' She said: 'Asr prayer.' He said: 'Have you already prayed it?' She said: 'I prayed it before I entered upon you.' He said: 'Move away from me; Asr has not yet come.' Then she repeated, and he said to her the like of his first statement. Then she repeated and spoke to him, and he said: 'I have heard what you said. Hand me water for ablution, for the people pray this prayer before its time.' Then he prayed."

    ✧ I entered upon A'ishah ؓ, and she prayed Asr at the hour that you call between the two prayers. Then she said ؓ: "Indeed, we, the family of Muhammad, do not pray the little yellow [prayer (i.e., Asr too early)]."

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to his Companions one night while they were waiting for the 'Isha' prayer, and said: "The people have prayed and slept, while you are waiting for it? Verily, you are in prayer as long as you are waiting for it." Then he ﷺ said: "Were it not for the weakness of the weak and the old age of the elderly, I would have delayed this prayer until the middle of the night."

    ✧ 'A'ishah, the Mother of the Believers ؓ heard my speech after the 'Isha' prayer, which the Bedouins call 'Atamah. He said: We were in a room between her and him separated by palm branches. She said: "O 'Urayyah – or O 'Urwah – what is this late-night conversation? I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sleeping before this prayer, nor conversing after it; either he slept and was safe, or he prayed and gained reward."

    بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَبَسَةَ ؓ، وَكَانَ قَدْ بَايَعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَقَالَ: أَخْبِرْنِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ عَمَّا أَنْتَ بِهِ عَالِمٌ وَأَنَا بِهِ جَاهِلٌ، فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ سَاعَاتِ الصَّلَاةِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْمَغْرِبَ فَالصَّلَاةُ مَقْبُولَةٌ مَشْهُودَةٌ حَتَّى تُصَلِّيَ الْفَجْرَ، ثُمَّ اجْتَنِبِ الصَّلَاةَ حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَتَبْيَضَّ، فَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ تَطْلُعُ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيْ شَيْطَانٍ، فَإِذَا ابْيَضَّتْ وَارْتَفَعَتْ، فَالصَّلَاةُ مَقْبُولَةٌ مَشْهُودَةٌ حَتَّى [يَنْتَصِفَ] [النَّهَارُ] وَتَعْتَدِلَ الشَّمْسُ وَيَقُومَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ فِي ظِلِّهِ، وَهِيَ السَّاعَةُ الَّتِي تُسَعَّرُ فِيهَا جَهَنَّمُ، فَإِذَا مَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَالصَّلَاةُ مَقْبُولَةٌ مَشْهُودَةٌ حَتَّى تَصْفَرَّ الشَّمْسُ، فَإِنَّ الشَّمْسَ تَغْرُبُ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيْ شَيْطَانٍ

    ✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Amr b. 'Abasa ؓ came to him, and he had pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon Islam. He said: "Inform me, O Muhammad, of what you know and I am ignorant of." He asked him about the times of prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "When you have prayed Maghrib, prayer is accepted and witnessed until you pray Fajr. Then avoid prayer until the sun rises and becomes white, for the sun rises between the two horns of a devil. When it has become white and risen, prayer is accepted and witnessed until midday, when the sun is at its zenith and every thing stands in its shadow—that is the hour in which Hell is stoked. When the sun declines, prayer is accepted and witnessed until the sun turns yellow, for the sun sets between the two horns of a devil."

He wanted to pray over it, so Ibn 'Umar ؓ stood and shouted at the top of his voice: "Do not pray over your deceased until the sun has risen." So the commander and the people sat down.

Ibn 'Abbas ؓ said: "It is not for any believing man or believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in their affair"—the verse—"and I do not know whether you will be punished for it or rewarded."

    ✧ I was sitting in a gathering in which Ubada ؓ was present. He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Gabriel ﷺ came to me from God Almighty and said: O Muhammad, God Almighty says: I have enjoined upon your community five prayers. Whoever fulfills them with their ablution, their times, their bowing, and their prostration, he has with Me a covenant that I will admit him by them into Paradise.

    فُرِضَتِ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ الْإِسْرَاءِ خَمْسِينَ صَلَاةً، ثُمَّ نَقَصَتْ حَتَّى جُعِلَتْ خَمْسًا، فَقَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: « كَانَ لَكَ فِي الْخَمْسِ خَمْسِينَ، الْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا

    ✧ Prayer was made obligatory on the Messenger of God ﷺ on the night of the Isra as fifty prayers, then it was reduced until it was made five. God, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'You have in the five the reward of fifty; a good deed is multiplied tenfold.'

    ✧ A Bedouin came to him and said: O Ibn Abbas, we are people among the Muslims, and here are people among the Muhajirun who claim that we are not upon anything. Ibn Abbas ؓ said: The Prophet of God ﷺ said: 'Whoever establishes the prayer, gives the zakat, performs the pilgrimage to the House, fasts Ramadan, and honors the guest — will enter Paradise.'

    ✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey – or an expedition – when clouds covered us. We tried to determine the qiblah and differed, so each of us prayed and drew a line in front of him to mark our places. When morning came, we looked and found that we had prayed toward other than the qiblah. We mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he did not order us to repeat, saying: “Your prayer is sufficient.”

    ✧ (Abu Sa'id ؓ was praying when al-Harith passed in front of him – or wanted to pass in front of him – until he was about to grab his hair. Al-Harith complained to Marwan, so Abu Sa'id came to Marwan, and Marwan said: "If you obey this man and his companions, they will surely turn you into Jews." Abu Sa'id ؓ said: "[You] have lied, by Allah. If you and your father became Jews, we would not become Jews with you.") Ayyub said: Muhammad said: "He spoke the truth. Judaism was offered to them in pre-Islamic times and they refused it."

    إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَتَاهُ أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ بْنُ التَّيِّهَانِ، فَاسْتَخْدَمَهُ، فَوَعَدَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنْ أَصَابَ سَبْيًا. فَلَقِيَ عُمَرَ ؓ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا الْهَيْثَمِ، إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ أَصَابَ سَبْيًا، قَالَ: فَائْتِهِ فَإِنَّهُ مُنْجِزٌ وَعْدَكَ. فَمَضَى أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ وَعُمَرُ ؓ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ ؓ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ أَتَاكَ يَنْتَجِزُ وَعْدَكَ ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « قَدْ أَصَبْنَا غُلَامَيْنِ أَسْوَدَيْنِ، اخْتَرْ أَيَّهُمَا شِئْتَ ». قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَسْتَشِيرُكَ، قَالَ ﷺ: « خُذْ هَذَا فَقَدْ صَلَّى عِنْدَنَا، وَلَا تَضْرِبْهُ، فَإِنَّا قَدْ نُهِينَا عَنْ ضَرْبِ الْمُصَلِّينَ

    ✧ Abu al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for a servant, so the Prophet ﷺ promised him one if he obtained captives. Then he met 'Umar ؓ, who said: "O Abu al-Haytham, the Prophet ﷺ has obtained captives. So go to him, for he will fulfill his promise to you." Abu al-Haytham and 'Umar ؓ went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and 'Umar ؓ said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu al-Haytham has come to you to claim your promise." The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "We have obtained two black slave boys. Choose whichever of them you wish." He said: "I consult you." He ﷺ said: "Take this one, for he has prayed with us, and do not beat him, for we have been forbidden from striking those who pray."

    ✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, which places are [the worst]?" He said: "I do not know," or he remained silent. Then he said to him: "Which places are the best?" He said: "I do not know," or he remained silent. Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and asked him, and he said: "I do not know." He said: "Ask your Lord." So he said: "We do not ask Him about anything," and he trembled a trembling by which the soul of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ almost ascended. When Gabriel ﷺ ascended, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: "Muhammad asked you: Which places are the best? And you said: I do not know?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Tell him that the best of places are the mosques, and the worst of places are the markets."

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us - and he mentioned a long hadith - in which there is: "Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will grant him for every span - or he said: for every cubit - forty thousand thousand cities of gold, silver, pearls, rubies, and gems. In every city there are forty thousand palaces, in every palace seventy thousand houses, in every house a thousand rooms, in every room forty thousand beds, on every bed a wife from the houris of Paradise, and in every house forty thousand serving girls, and in every house forty thousand tables, on every table forty thousand bowls, in every bowl forty thousand kinds of food. And Allah, the Exalted, will give His friend such strength that he will be able to have intercourse with all those wives and consume all that food and drink in a single day."

    ✧ Anas b. Malik ؓ passed by before the sweeping plague, and he would pass by a mosque that had been newly built and ask about it. He would be told: This is a mosque built by the tribe of so-and-so. He said: It used to be said: (A time will come upon people when they will build mosques [to boast with them], then they will not frequent them except a little). Ayyub said: Then the sweeping flood came and swept them away.

    ✧ The best form of ribat (keeping guard) is awaiting the prayer and keeping to the gatherings of remembrance. No servant prays and then remains seated in his place of prayer but that the angels continue to send blessings upon him until he breaks his ablution or gets up.

    ✧ Abdullah came to Abu Musa at his home. When the prayer time arrived, Abu Musa said: 'Go forward, O Abu Abd al-Rahman, for you are older than me and more learned.' He said: 'No, you go forward, for we came to you in your home and your mosque, so you are more entitled.' Abu Musa ؓ went forward and removed his sandals. When he said the salam, Abdullah said to him: 'What did you intend by removing them? Are you in the sacred valley of Tuwa?'

Menstruation was imposed upon them, and they were moved back. Abdullah said: So move them back from where Allah, Mighty and Majestic, moved them back.

    ( دَخَلْتُ مَسْجِدَ حِمْصَ، فَإِذَا أَنَا بِفَتًى وَالنَّاسُ حَوْلَهُ، جَعْدٌ قَطَطٌ، فَإِذَا تَكَلَّمَ كَأَنَّمَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْ فِيهِ نُورٌ وَلُؤْلُؤٌ، فَقُلْتُ: مَنْ هَذَا ) ؟ قَالُوا: مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ ؓ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ اللهَ تَعَالَى آمِنًا فَلْيَأْتِ هَذِهِ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ حَيْثُ يُؤَذَّنُ لَهَا، فَإِنَّهُنَّ مِنْ سُنَنِ الْهُدَى، وَمِمَّا سَنَّهُ لَكُمْ نَبِيُّكُمْ ﷺ، وَلَا يَقُلْ: إِنَّ لِي مُصَلًّى فِي بَيْتِي فَأُصَلِّي فِيهِ، فَإِنَّكُمْ إِنْ فَعَلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ تَرَكْتُمْ سُنَّةَ نَبِيِّكُمْ ﷺ، وَلَوْ تَرَكْتُمْ سُنَّةَ نَبِيِّكُمْ لَضَلَلْتُمْ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَمَا يَتَخَلَّفُ عَنْهَا إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ بَيِّنُ النِّفَاقِ، حَتَّى كَانَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَرِيضُ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ حَتَّى يُقَامَ فِي الصَّفِّ

    ✧ (I entered the mosque of Hims, and there was a young man with people around him, with short curly hair. When he spoke, it was as if light and pearls came out of his mouth. I said: Who is this?) They said: Mu'adh b. Jabal ؓ. I heard him say: Whoever is pleased to meet Allah Almighty safely, let him come to these five prayers where the call is made for them, for they are among the ways of guidance and among what your Prophet ﷺ instituted for you. Let him not say: I have a prayer place in my house so I will pray there. If you do that, you will abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ, and if you abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet, you will go astray. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I have seen us in the time of the Prophet ﷺ when none would stay away from it except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was evident, to the point that a sick man would be supported between two men until he was placed in the row.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: «Whoever keeps to the congregation wherever he is and with whomever he is will pass over the bridge like flashing lightning in the first group with the foremost, and his face will be brighter than the moon on the night of the full moon. For every day and night he keeps to it, he will have the reward of a martyr. And whoever keeps to the front row and catches the first takbir without harming a believer, Allah Almighty will give him the reward of the muezzin on the Day of Resurrection.»

    ✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ while he was leading the people in prayer, Abd al-Rahman wanted to move back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him: 'Stay in your place.' So he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed following the prayer of Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ.

    دَخَلْتُ عَلَى جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ؓ، فَوَجَدْتُهُ جَالِسًا يُصَلِّي لِأَصْحَابِهِ الْعَصْرَ، وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ: قَالَ: فَنَظَرْتُ حَتَّى سَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ: غَفَرَ اللهُ لَكَ، أَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تُصَلِّي بِهِمْ وَأَنْتَ جَالِسٌ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا مَرِيضٌ، فَجَلَسْتُ، فَأَمَرْتُهُمْ أَنْ يَجْلِسُوا، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « الْإِمَامُ جُنَّةٌ، فَإِذَا صَلَّى قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا، وَإِنْ صَلَّى جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا

    ✧ I entered upon Jabir b. Abdullah ؓ and found him sitting while leading his companions in the afternoon prayer, and they were sitting. He said: I watched until he said the salam, then I said: May Allah forgive you, you are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you lead them in prayer while sitting? He said: I am ill, so I sat and ordered them to sit. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The imam is a shield; if he prays standing, then pray standing, and if he prays sitting, then pray sitting.'

    ✧ He used to lead the people in prayer here, and some people would place their heads before he placed his head, and raise their heads before he raised his head. When he finished, he turned to them and said: 'O people, why do you sin and cause others to sin? I prayed for you the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I did not deviate from it.'

    خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَذَكَرَ حَدِيثًا طَوِيلًا فِيهِ: « وَمَنْ أَمَّ قَوْمًا وَهُمْ بِهِ رَاضُونَ فَاقْتَصَدَ بِهِمْ فِي حُضُورِهِ وَقِرَاءَتِهِ، وَرُكُوعِهِ، وَسُجُودِهِ، وَقُعُودِهِ، فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أُجُورِهِمْ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَقْتَصِدْ بِهِمْ فِي ذَلِكَ رُدَّتْ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاتُهُ وَلَمْ تَتَجَاوَزْ تَرَاقِيَهُ، وَكَانَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ أَمِيرٍ جَائِرٍ مُعْتَدٍ لَمْ يُصْلِحْ إِلَى رَعِيَّتِهِ، وَلَمْ يَقُمْ فِيهِمْ بِأَمْرِ اللهِ تَعَالَى » فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي، وَمَا مَنْزِلَةُ الْأَمِيرِ الْجَائِرِ الْمُعْتَدِي الَّذِي لَمْ يُصْلِحْ لِرَعِيَّتِهِ، وَلَمْ يَقُمْ فِيهِمْ بِأَمْرِ اللهِ تَعَالَى ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « هُوَ رَابِعُ أَرْبَعَةٍ، وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ: إِبْلِيسُ، وَفِرْعَوْنُ، وَقَابِيلُ قَاتِلُ النَّفْسِ، وَالْأَمِيرُ الْجَائِرُ رَابِعُهُمْ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us, and he mentioned a long hadith in which he said: "Whoever leads a people and they are pleased with him, and he is moderate with them in his presence, his recitation, his bowing, his prostration, and his sitting, then he will have the like of their rewards. And whoever is not moderate with them in that, his prayer will be returned to him and will not go beyond his collarbones, and he will be in the position of a tyrannical, transgressing ruler who did not act rightly toward his subjects and did not establish among them the command of Allah, Exalted is He." Then Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom, what is the position of the tyrannical, transgressing ruler who did not act rightly toward his subjects and did not establish among them the command of Allah, Exalted is He?" He ﷺ said: "He is the fourth of four, and he is the most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection: Iblis, Pharaoh, Qabil the killer of a soul, and the tyrannical ruler is their fourth."

    ✧ He and his father entered upon Anas b. Malik ؓ during the time of Umar b. Abd al-Aziz ؓ, when he was governor, and he prayed a light prayer as if it were the prayer of a traveler or close to it. When he said the salam, he said: "May Allah have mercy on you, did you consider this prayer; is it the obligatory prayer or something you offered voluntarily?" He said: "It is the obligatory prayer, and it is indeed the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; I did not miss anything from it except something I forgot. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'Do not be harsh on yourselves, lest harshness be imposed on you. For a people were harsh on themselves, so harshness was imposed on them. Those are their remnants in the monasteries and hermitages and monasticism which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them.'"

    ✧ Mu'adh ؓ led his people in the dawn prayer and recited Surat al-Baqarah, and behind him was a Bedouin man who had a water-carrying camel of his. When it was the second rak'ah, the Bedouin prayed and left Mu'adh ؓ. So they informed the Prophet ﷺ about him, and he said: "I feared for my camel, and I have dependents whom I earn for." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Pray with them the prayer of the weakest of them, for among them are the young, the elderly, and the one with a need. Do not be a tempter."

    ✧ Salmān ؓ was put forward by his people to lead them in prayer, but he refused until they compelled him. When he led them, he said: “Are all of you satisfied?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Praise be to God. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Three people’s prayer is not accepted: a woman who leaves her house without her husband’s permission; a runaway slave; and a man who leads people in prayer while they dislike him.’”

Then we prayed 'Asr, and we came upon a group of people praying 'Asr, and we prayed with them. Then we prayed Maghrib, and we came upon a group of people praying Maghrib, and we prayed with them. But when I stood for the third time, he detained me.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and camped during the latter part of the night, and he did not wake up until the sun had risen. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Bilal ؓ to give the adhan, then he prayed two rak'ahs. Ibn 'Abbas ؓ said: "By it, the world and all that is in it would not please me."
