al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 514

✧ The command to follow the imam in his actions

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبَصْرِيُّ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ - عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ قَالَ:

« إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمَّا انْتَهَى [إِلَى] عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ أَرَادَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنْ يَتَأَخَّرَ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَنْ مَكَانَكَ»، فَصَلَّى وَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِصَلَاةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ؓ

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ while he was leading the people in prayer, Abd al-Rahman wanted to move back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him: 'Stay in your place.' So he prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed following the prayer of Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ.
