✧ Dislike of building mosques for other than prayer in them

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ

أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ؓ، مَرَّ قَبْلَ الطَّاعُونِ الْجَارِفِ، فَجَعَلَ يَمُرُّ بِالْمَسْجِدِ قَدْ أُحْدِثَ فَيَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ. فَيَقُولُ: هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ أَحْدَثَهُ بَنُو فُلَانٍ. فَقَالَ: كَانَ يُقَالُ: ( يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَبْنُونَ الْمَسَاجِدَ [يَتَبَاهَوْنَ] بِهَا، ثُمَّ لَا يَعْمُرُونَهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ). قَالَ أَيُّوبُ: فَجَاءَ الْجَارِفُ فَجَرَفَهُمْ

Translation

✧ Anas b. Malik ؓ passed by before the sweeping plague, and he would pass by a mosque that had been newly built and ask about it. He would be told: This is a mosque built by the tribe of so-and-so. He said: It used to be said: (A time will come upon people when they will build mosques [to boast with them], then they will not frequent them except a little). Ayyub said: Then the sweeping flood came and swept them away.
