✧ We were in Madinah selling loads and buying them, and we used to call ourselves brokers and the people used to call us that. One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and called us by a name that was better than the name we called ourselves and better than what the people called us. Then he said, "O company of merchants, your selling is witnessed by vain talk and swearing, so mix it with charity."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were selling slaves in Madinah, and we used to call ourselves brokers, so he called us by a better name than we called ourselves. When Jibril ascended, Allah, exalted is He, said: "Muhammad asked you which of the places is best, and you said I do not know, and he asked you which of the places is worst, and you said I do not know." He said: "Yes." He said: "Then tell him that the best of places are the mosques and the worst of places are the marketplaces."

✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade hoarding food." Muslim included the hadith of Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn 'Ata' from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab from Ma'mar ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Nadlah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No one hoards except a sinner." This hadith is one of the things that refute the view that a Companion's hadith is not authentic unless two Followers narrate from him, for this Ma'mar has no narrator other than Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab. As for the hadith of al-Qasim from Abu Umamah, it is not with that wording. Reports have been narrated about the prohibition of hoarding food and refraining from helping Muslims in times of hardship, which must be mentioned in this place as Muslims are driven to it at the present time. Among them: Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

The first person we met was Abu al-Yasar, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with him was a servant of his. He was wearing a Ma'afiri cloak, and his servant also had a Ma'afiri cloak, and he had a bundle of scrolls. My father said to him: I see in your face a trace of anger. He said: Yes, I had money owed to me by so-and-so, the son of so-and-so, the Harami. I went to his family and said: Is he there? They said: No. Then his son came out, and I said to him: Where is your father? He said: He heard your voice and entered my mother's bedchamber. I said: Come out, for I know where you are. He came out to me and I said to him: What made you hide from me? He said: I, by Allah, will tell you and not lie to you. I feared, by Allah, that if I spoke to you I would lie to you, or if I promised you I would break my promise, and you are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: By Allah, were you truly in hardship? I said: By Allah. He said: By Allah. I said: By Allah. He said: By Allah. Then he spread out the scroll and erased the debt, and said: If you find means to pay, then pay; otherwise you are released. I bear witness that these two eyes of mine saw — and he placed his two fingers on his eyes — and these two ears of mine heard — and he placed his two fingers in his ears — and my heart comprehended it — and he pointed to the artery of his heart — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: “Whoever grants respite to a debtor in difficulty and waives for him, Allah will shade him in His shade.”

But if you found it in a ruin of the pre-Islamic era or in an uninhabited village or on an unfrequented road, then in it and in the buried treasure (rikāz) the fifth is due.” I have presented many arguments in this book for authenticating the narrations of ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb when the narrator from him is trustworthy; and none is reported from him better than these narrations. I had been seeking clear evidence for Shuʿayb b. Muḥammad’s hearing from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, but I have not obtained it until now. Sahih.

✧ A man came to Abdullah b. Amr, asking him about a muhrim who had intercourse with his wife. He pointed to Abdullah b. Umar and said, “Go to that one and ask him.” Shuayb said: The man did not recognize him, so I went with him, and he asked Ibn Umar. He said, “Your Hajj is invalid.” The man said, “So what should I do?” He said, “Enter ihram with the people, do what they do, and when you reach the coming year, perform Hajj and offer a sacrificial animal.” He then returned to Abdullah b. Amr while I was with him, and he said, “Go to Ibn Abbas and ask him.” Shuayb said: So I went with him to Ibn Abbas, and he asked him, and he said to him the same as Ibn Umar had said. He returned to Abdullah b. Amr while I was with him and informed him of what Ibn Abbas had said. Then he said, “What do you say?” He replied, “My view is like what the two of them said.” This is a hadith of trustworthy narrators; its transmitters are memorizers. It is as if it takes one by the hand in establishing the soundness of Shuayb b. Muhammad’s hearing from his grandfather Abdullah b. Amr. This is the end of what my independent effort has led me to add in the Book of Sale beyond what the two imams, Abu Abdullah al-Bukhari and Abu al-Husayn al-Qushayri, compiled. Within this book I have mentioned books for which al-Bukhari set chapter headings at the end of the Book of Sales, among them: the Book of Salam, the Book of Pre-emption, the Book of Leasing, the Book of Transfer of Debt, the Book of Cultivation, the Book of Sharecropping, the Book of Irrigation Partnerships, the Book of Grants, the Book of Gifts, the Book of Qirad, the Book of Lost Property, the Book of Wrongs, the Book of Refraining from Begging, the Book of Pledge, the Book of Partnership, the Book of Manumission, the Book of the Mukatab, the Book of Testimonies, the Book of Settlement, the Book of Conditions, the Book of Bequests, and the Book of Endowment. I have only explained them at the end of this book so that no one might suppose that I left the Book of Sales devoid of these books. Allah is the Helper in what I establish through tracing the reports of the two imams, and He is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs.

✧ I heard 'Amr b. al-'As say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me, so I came to him and he ordered me to put on my clothes and take my weapons and then come to him. He said: So I did that, then I came to him while he was performing ablution. He looked up at me, then lowered his gaze, then said, "O 'Amr, I intend to send you on a military expedition; may Allah grant you spoils and keep you safe, and I desire for you a sound desire for wealth." He said: So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I did not embrace Islam out of desire for wealth; rather I embraced Islam out of desire for Islam and to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Then he said, "O 'Amr, how excellent is sound wealth for a righteous man."

  239. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2131Sahih

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them with the traces of a bath on him, and he was in good spirits. He said: So we thought he had been intimate with his wife, so we said, "O Messenger of Allah, we see you have arisen in good spirits." He said, "Yes, and praise be to Allah." Then he mentioned wealth, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no harm in wealth for one who fears Allah, and health for one who fears Allah is better than wealth, and cheerfulness of spirit is part of bliss."

  240. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2132Sahih

✧ Hakim b. Hizam carried out a raid with two horses on the day of Khaybar, and they were both wounded. So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "My two horses have been wounded, O Messenger of Allah." So he gave him something, then he asked for more and he gave him more, then he asked for more. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Hakim, this wealth is green and sweet. Whoever asks people, they give him, and the one who asks from it is like one who eats but never becomes full."

  241. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2133Sahih

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Seek the beauty in pursuit of the world, for indeed every person is facilitated for what has been written for them from it."

  242. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2134Sahih

✧ "Do not think the provision is slow, for no servant will die until he receives the last of the provision that is his. So be moderate in seeking: take the lawful and leave the unlawful."

  243. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2135Sahih

✧ "Indeed, one of you will not die until he completes his provision, so do not think provision is slow. Fear Allah, O people, and be moderate in seeking. Take what is lawful and leave what is forbidden."

✧ "There is no deed that draws nearer to Paradise except that I have commanded you to do it, and no deed that draws nearer to the Fire except that I have forbidden you from it. Let none of you think his provision is slow, for Jibril ﷺ cast into my heart that none of you will depart this world until he completes his provision. So fear Allah, O people, and be moderate in seeking. If any of you thinks his provision is slow, let him not seek it through disobedience to Allah, for Allah's bounty is not obtained through disobedience."

✧ Let not the one who amasses wealth without its right be envied—or he said, without its due—for if he gives charity, it will not be accepted from him, and whatever remains will be his provision for the Fire.

  246. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2138Sahih

✧ We were a people who called ourselves brokers, and we used to sell in al-Baqi'. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and called us by a name better than our own name, saying, "O company of merchants, this selling is attended by lying and oaths, so mix it with charity."
