✧ Mu'awiyah wrote to Marwan: When a man's property is stolen and he finds it, he is more entitled to it wherever he finds it. He said: Marwan wrote that to me while I was over al-Yamamah, so I wrote to Marwan that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ ruled that when the property is with an unsuspected man, the owner may either take it by paying its price or pursue the thief. Then Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman ruled accordingly after him. He said: Marwan sent my letter to Mu'awiyah, and Mu'awiyah wrote to Marwan: You are not the one—nor is Usayd—to judge against me in what I have been given authority, but I judge over you both, so carry out what I have commanded you. Marwan sent Mu'awiyah's letter to him, and he said: By Allah, I will never judge by it.
