✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ being asked about fresh dates for dry dates, and he asked those around him: Does it decrease when it dries? They said: Yes. He said: Then no. Abu al-Walid said: I heard Malik b. Anas another time say: He disliked it. This is the wording of Abu al-Walid's hadith. Ismail b. Umayyah narrated similarly from Abdullah b. Yazid, the freed slave of al-Aswad b. Sufyan. Malik narrated it once and disliked it.

machine translationSome people have spoken about the chain of this hadith and said: Zayd Abū ʿAyyāsh is unknown (majhūl), and a chain like this, according to the principle of al-Shāfiʿī, is not to be used as evidence. But the matter is not as he imagined, for this Abū ʿAyyāsh is a well-known freed slave (mawlā) of Banū Zuhrah, and Mālik mentioned him in the Muwaṭṭaʾ, and Mālik does not narrate from a man whose hadith is abandoned (matrūk) in any way. This is Mālik's way and his habit.
in المستدرك على الصحيحين, p. 2277 - Ibn Ḥazm
زيد أبو عياش لا يدري من هو
machine translationZayd Abū ʿAyyāsh: it is not known who he is.
