He ﷺ said: 'O Iyad, did you hear it or witness it?' I said: I heard the call to prayer: 'and there is no god but Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set them free.

✧ The handles of Islam and the foundations of the religion are three, upon which Islam is built. Whoever abandons one of them is a disbeliever whose blood is lawful: the testimony that there is no god but Allah, establishing the obligatory prayer, and fasting Ramadan. Then Ibn 'Abbas ؓ said: "You find a man with much wealth who does not give zakah, yet he remains a disbeliever, and his blood is not lawful. ✧ There will be in my community people who disbelieve in Allah and in divine decree while they are unaware, just as the Jews and Christians disbelieved. He said: I said: "May I be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, how do they say?" He ﷺ said: "They say: good is from Allah and evil is from Iblis." He said: "And they recite the Book of Allah Almighty upon that, and they disbelieve in Allah, Mighty and Majestic, after faith and knowledge. What enmity, hatred, and argument will my community encounter from them! Those are the heretics of this community. In their time will be the tyranny of the ruler, and what a tyranny, injustice, and selfishness! Then Allah Almighty will send upon them a plague, and most of them will perish. Then there will be metamorphosis and sinking into the earth, and few among them will be saved. On that day everyone will have little joy and intense grief. Then there will be metamorphosis: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will transform most of those into monkeys and pigs." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept until we wept for his weeping. It was said: "What is this weeping, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said: "Out of mercy for them, the wretched ones; for among them is the diligent worshipper and the devoted worshipper, even though they are not the first to have fallen into this saying and become distressed by it. Indeed, most of the Children of Israel who perished perished because of it." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what is faith in divine decree?" He ﷺ said: "To believe in Allah alone, and to know that no one besides Him possesses harm or benefit, and to believe in Paradise and the Fire, and to know that Allah Almighty created them before creation, then created His creation and made whomever He willed for Paradise and whomever He willed for the Fire."

✧ I was in Damascus when seventy heads of the Haruriyyah were brought and set up. Abu Umamah ؓ came, entered the mosque, prayed two rak'ahs, then came out, stood over them, and began to shed tears for a while. Then he said: What does Iblis do to the people of Islam? three times. Then he said: O Abu Ghalib, you are in a land where its whims are many and its terrors are many. I said: Yes. He said: May Allah protect you from them... I said: Why do you shed tears? He said: Out of mercy for them, for they were from the people of Islam. Then he said: Do you recite Surah Al 'Imran? I said: Yes. He said: Recite this verse: It is He who sent down to you the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise. He said: These had deviation in their hearts, so they were led astray. Then he recited: On the day when faces turn white. I said: Are they these? He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Children of Israel divided into seventy-one sects, all in the Fire except the main body. A man beside me said: O Abu Umamah, do you not see what the main body is doing? He said: Upon them is what they are burdened with, and upon you is what you are burdened with. If you obey him, you will be guided. Hearing and obedience are better than disobedience and division. They judge for us, then they kill us. I said to him: This hadith — did you narrate it from something, or did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or do you say it from your own opinion? He said: Then I would be bold to narrate to you what I did not hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard it from him twice or three times, until they said seven.
