✧ 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ gathered the people for the arrival of the delegation. He said to Zayd b. Arqam: 'Look at the companions of Muhammad ﷺ and give them permission first, then the generation that follows them.' They entered and stood in rows before him. He looked and saw a huge man wearing a patched cloak. 'Umar ؓ gestured to him, so he came. 'Umar ؓ said: 'Eeh' three times. The man said: 'Eeh' three times. 'Umar ؓ said: 'Uff, stand up.' He stood up. He looked and saw al-Ash'ari, a man of light body, short and squat. He gestured to him, so he came. 'Umar ؓ said: 'Eeh.' Al-Ash'ari said: 'Eeh.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'Eeh.' He said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, ask and open a topic, and we will tell you.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'Uff, stand up, for a shepherd of sheep will never benefit you.' He looked and saw a white man of light body. He gestured to him, so he came. 'Umar ؓ said: 'Eeh.' He leaped up, praised Allah, the Exalted, extolled Him, and admonished him by Allah. Then he said: 'You have been placed in charge of the affair of this ummah. So fear Allah, the Exalted, in what you have been placed in charge of regarding the affair of this ummah and the people of your flock, especially in your own self. For you are accountable and will be questioned about what you were entrusted with, and you are a trustee. You must fulfill the trust that is upon you, so that you are given your reward according to the measure of your deeds.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'No man has spoken truthfully to me since I was made caliph except you. Who are you?' He said: 'I am al-Rabi' b. Ziyad.' He said: 'The brother of al-Muhajir b. Ziyad?' He said: 'Yes.' 'Umar ؓ equipped an army and appointed al-Ash'ari over them. Then he said: 'Look at Rabi' b. Ziyad. If he is truthful in what he said, then he has help in this matter, so appoint him. Then let not ten days pass without you checking on his work and writing to me about his conduct in his post, so that it is as if I myself appointed him.' Then 'Umar ؓ said: 'Our Prophet enjoined us, saying: "The most fearful thing I fear for you after me is a hypocrite with a knowledgeable tongue."'
