✧ A man was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who had effectiveness against the enemy and was diligent. He said: 'I do not know this one.' They said: 'Yes, we describe him as such and such.' He said: 'I do not know him.' While we were thus, the man appeared, and they said: 'This is he, O Messenger of Allah.' He ﷺ said: 'I did not know this one. He is the first horn I have seen in my Ummah. Indeed, in him is a touch from the devil.' When the man drew near, he greeted, and they returned the greeting. He said to him: 'I adjure you by Allah, did you say to yourself when you appeared to us that there is no one among the people better than you?' He said: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: Then he entered the mosque and prayed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr: 'Arise and kill him.' Abu Bakr ؓ entered and found him standing praying. Abu Bakr said to himself: 'Indeed, prayer has sanctity and a right, and if only I could consult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He came to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Did you kill him?' He ؓ said: 'No, I saw him standing praying, and I saw that prayer has sanctity and a right. If you wish, I will kill him.' He ﷺ said: 'You are not the one for him. Go, O 'Umar, and kill him.' 'Umar ؓ entered the mosque and found him prostrating. He waited for a long time, then 'Umar ؓ said to himself: 'Indeed, prostration has a right, and if only I could consult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for someone better than me has already consulted him.' He came to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: 'Did you kill him?' He ؓ said: 'No, I saw him prostrating, and I saw that prostration has a right. If you wish, I will kill him.' He ﷺ said: 'You are not the one for him. Arise, O 'Ali, you are the one for him if you find him.' He went and found that he had left the mosque. He returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: 'Did you kill him?' He said: 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If he had been killed, no two men of my Ummah would have differed until the Dajjal.'
