✧ I was in Damascus when seventy heads of the Haruriyyah were brought and set up. Abu Umamah ؓ came, entered the mosque, prayed two rak'ahs, then came out, stood over them, and began to shed tears for a while. Then he said: What does Iblis do to the people of Islam? three times. Then he said: O Abu Ghalib, you are in a land where its whims are many and its terrors are many. I said: Yes. He said: May Allah protect you from them... I said: Why do you shed tears? He said: Out of mercy for them, for they were from the people of Islam. Then he said: Do you recite Surah Al 'Imran? I said: Yes. He said: Recite this verse: It is He who sent down to you the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise. He said: These had deviation in their hearts, so they were led astray. Then he recited: On the day when faces turn white. I said: Are they these? He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Children of Israel divided into seventy-one sects, all in the Fire except the main body. A man beside me said: O Abu Umamah, do you not see what the main body is doing? He said: Upon them is what they are burdened with, and upon you is what you are burdened with. If you obey him, you will be guided. Hearing and obedience are better than disobedience and division. They judge for us, then they kill us. I said to him: This hadith — did you narrate it from something, or did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or do you say it from your own opinion? He said: Then I would be bold to narrate to you what I did not hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard it from him twice or three times, until they said seven.
