✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a bearer of good news came from a military expedition and informed him of the victory of Allah Almighty which He granted to his expedition, and of the conquest of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, which He opened for them. He said: O Messenger of Allah, while we were seeking the enemy, and Allah Almighty had defeated them, I caught up with a man with a sword. When he sensed that the sword had reached him, he turned while running and said: 'I am a Muslim,' so I killed him. But, O Prophet of Allah, he was only seeking protection. He ﷺ said: 'Did you not split open his heart to see whether he was truthful or lying?' He said: If I had split open his heart, it would not have informed me; is his heart anything but a lump of flesh? He said: 'So you killed him, not knowing what was in his heart, nor believing his tongue?' He said: O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me. He ﷺ said: 'I will not ask forgiveness for you.' Then he died, and they buried him, but he appeared on the surface of the earth three times. When his people saw that, they felt ashamed and feared (from what befell his burden), so they threw him into one of those mountain passes.
