✧ Dislike of Self-Praise

وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ: حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ قَالَ:

مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ مُؤْمِنٌ فَهُوَ كَافِرٌ، وَمَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ، وَمَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ عَالِمٌ فَهُوَ جَاهِلٌ، قَالَ: فَنَازَعَهُ رَجُلٌ قَالَ: إِنْ تَذْهَبُوا بِالسُّلْطَانِ فَإِنَّ لَنَا الْجَنَّةَ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ

Translation

✧ Whoever claims that he is a believer, he is a disbeliever. Whoever claims that he is in Paradise, he is in the Fire. Whoever claims that he is a scholar, he is ignorant. He said: Then a man disputed with him, saying: “If you take authority, then we have Paradise.” He said: ‘Umar ؓ said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever claims that he is in Paradise, he is in the Fire.”
