✧ We were with one of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ one day during an illness he had, and he was unconscious. The Prophet ﷺ came to him and said: 'What were you discussing just now?' He said: 'We were mentioning the martyrs of this Ummah; we only consider one who goes out with his wealth until he is killed.' He ﷺ said: 'The martyrs of my Ummah would then be few. They are martyred by killing, plague, drowning, abdominal disease, a woman dying in childbirth, and her dying in her postpartum period.'

✧ Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas ؓ disputed with Talhah b. 'Ubaydillah ؓ over some property of his. Talhah ؓ came to him one day while Sa'd ؓ was sitting with his sword drawn, placing it on his thighs. Talhah ؓ said to him: 'For whom have you prepared this, O Sa'd?' He said: 'For you.' He said: 'Would you really do it?' He said: 'By the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever fights over his wealth or wealth of his and is killed, he is a martyr."'

✧ Rafi' b. Khadij ؓ was struck on the day of Uhud in his chest with an arrow. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Remove the arrow.' He said: 'If you wish, I will remove the arrow and the cotton, and if you wish, I will remove the arrow and leave the cotton, and I will testify for you on the Day of Resurrection that you are a martyr.' I said: 'Remove the arrow and leave the cotton, and testify for me on the Day of Resurrection that I am a martyr.' He said: 'Yes.' So he removed the arrow and left the cotton, and he lived through the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and 'Umar and 'Uthman ؓ. When it was the time of Mu'awiyah ؓ or after him, he died after 'Asr. They wanted to take him out [for burial], but Ibn 'Umar ؓ said: 'A man like Rafi' b. Khadij should not be taken out until the people of the surrounding villages are informed.' So he sat [unburied] until the next day. When the next day came, he was taken out. A female client of his wept at the edge of the grave, so Ibn 'Umar ؓ said: 'The old man cannot bear the punishment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, from this foolish woman,' or words to that effect.

✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ in the cave, and he said: 'O Allah, stabbing and plague.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I know that you have asked for the deaths of your nation, so this stabbing we have known, but what is the plague?' He said: 'A sore like boils; if you live long, you will see it.'

✧ The plague was mentioned, so I recalled that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'A poke that afflicts my nation from their enemies among the jinn, a gland like the gland of the stomach. Whoever remains in it is like a stationed soldier, and whoever is afflicted by it is a martyr, and whoever flees from it is like one who flees from battle.'

✧ The martyrs were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'They are those who, when they meet the enemy, do not turn their faces until they are killed. Those are the ones who will recline in the lofty chambers of Paradise, and their Lord will smile at them. And when your Lord smiles at a servant in a situation, there is no reckoning upon him.'

✧ Indeed, Allah Almighty takes the souls of the martyrs of the sea with His own hand and does not entrust them to the Angel of Death. The parable of his soul when it departs from his chest is like milk when it enters his chest.

✧ The martyrs are three: A man who goes out with his own self and his wealth, patient and seeking reward, not wanting to kill or be killed. If he dies or is killed, all his sins will be forgiven, and he will be saved from the punishment of the grave, and he will be secure from the greatest terror, and he will be married to the houris with wide lovely eyes, and the garment of honor will be placed upon him, and the crown of eternity will be placed upon his head. The second: He goes out with his own self and his wealth, seeking reward, wanting to kill but not be killed. If he dies or is killed, his knee will be with the knee of Abraham, the close friend of the Most Merciful, before Allah, in a seat of truth. The third: A man who goes out with his own self and his wealth, seeking reward, wanting to kill and be killed. If he dies or is killed, he will come on the Day of Resurrection brandishing his sword, placing it on his shoulder, while the people are kneeling on their knees, saying: 'Make way for us, for we have offered our blood for Allah, Mighty and Majestic.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, if he said that to Abraham or to any prophet among the prophets, he would move aside for him from the path because of the right he sees. He will not ask Allah Almighty for anything except that He gives it to him, and he will not intercede for anyone except that his intercession is accepted, and he will be given in Paradise whatever he loves, and no prophet or anyone else will surpass him in station in Paradise. He will have in the Garden of Firdaws a thousand thousand cities of silver, a thousand thousand cities of gold, a thousand thousand cities of pearl, a thousand thousand cities of ruby, a thousand thousand cities of large pearls, a thousand thousand cities of chrysolite, and a thousand thousand cities of light. In each city among the cities are a thousand thousand palaces, in each palace a thousand thousand houses, in each house a thousand thousand couches. Each couch is a thousand years' journey in length and a thousand years' journey in width, and its height in the sky is five hundred years' journey. Upon it is a wife whose sleeve protrudes from the sides of the couch twenty miles from each corner; it has four corners. The lashes of her eyes are like the wings of eagles or like the primary feathers of eagles, and her eyebrows are like the crescent moon. Upon her are garments that grow in the gardens of Eden, watered from Tasnim, and their blossoms dazzle the eyes besides her. If she appeared to the people of this world, no sent prophet and no angel brought near would see her without being tempted by her beauty. Before each woman among them are a hundred thousand virgin female servants, besides the servants of her husband. Before each couch are chairs made of a substance other than the substance of the couch, each couch a hundred thousand cubits long. On each couch are a hundred thousand mattresses, the thickness of each mattress is as between heaven and earth, and between them is a distance of five hundred years' journey. They will enter Paradise five hundred years before the truthful and the believers. They will deflower the virgins. When he draws near to the couch, the mattresses will lower themselves for him until he mounts it, reclining wherever he wishes. He will recline with the houris with wide lovely eyes for seventy years, and one more splendid and more beautiful than her will call to him: 'O servant of Allah, is there not for us a turn with you?' He will turn to her and say: 'Who are you?' She will say: 'I am of those about whom Allah Almighty said: "And with Us is more." Then one even more splendid and more beautiful will call to him: 'O servant of Allah, do you have no need of us?' He will say: 'I did not know your place.' She will say: 'Did you not know that Allah Almighty said: "No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes"?' He will say: 'Yes, by my Lord.'" He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Perhaps he will be occupied with her after that for a year, occupied only with the bliss and pleasure he is in. When the people of Paradise enter, the martyrs of the sea will ride boats of pearls on a river of light. Their oars are rods of pearl, coral, and ruby. With them is a wind called al-Zahra' on waves like mountains. It is only shimmering light. Those waves are lighter in their eyes and sweeter to them than cold drink in a white glass to the people of this world on a summer day. Their days, which they had in the vanguard of their companions who were in this world, their boats will be advanced before their companions by a thousand thousand years and fifty thousand years. Their right flank behind them is at half the proximity of those to their companions, and their left flank is likewise. Their rearguard are those who were behind them in those boats of pearl. While they are thus traveling in that river, those waves will raise them to a throne before the Throne of the Lord of Might. While they are thus, the angels will appear to them, being multiplied in beauty, splendor, comeliness, and light over the servants of the people of Paradise, just as they are multiplied over the people of Paradise by their stations with Allah. One of them will be about to fall prostrate to some of their servants among the angels, but he will say: 'O friend of Allah, I am a servant to you. We are a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Eden, a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Firdaws, a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Bliss, a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Refuge, a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Eternity, a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of the Permitted, and a hundred thousand stewards in the gardens of Peace. Each steward among them is at the gate of a city. In each city are a hundred thousand palaces, in each palace a hundred thousand houses of gold, silver, large pearls, rubies, chrysolite, pearls, and light. In them are his wives, his couches, and his servants. If the lowest of them were to host the jinn and mankind, and their like with them a thousand thousand times, the lowest palace among his palaces would be spacious enough for them, all they wish of hospitality, servants, fruits, produce, food, and drink. Each palace is sufficient with what it contains of these things for all their capacity, not needing the other palace in any of that. The lowest of them in station is the one who enters upon Allah morning and evening, and He commands all honor. He will not be occupied until he looks upon His beautiful face, Blessed and Exalted is He."

✧ A shaykh who was stationed at the coast told me: I went out on the night of my guard duty; no one else among those assigned to guard went out except me. I came to the structure and climbed upon it—the structure was the guard post. It appeared to me that the sea was rising until it was level with the mountaintops. This happened several times while I was awake. Then I slept and saw in a dream as though I had a banner, and the people of the city were walking behind me while I was in front of them. When morning came, I returned to the city and met the commander of the army and Abu Salih, the freedman of Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ. They were the first to leave the city. They said to me: 'Where are the people?' I said: 'They returned before me.' They said: 'Why don't you tell us the truth? We are the first to leave the city.' He said: So I informed them that no one had gone out except me. Abu Salih said: 'What did you see?' I said: 'By Allah, it appeared to me in what I saw that the sea was rising until it was level with the mountaintops.' Abu Salih said: 'You have spoken the truth. Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: "There is no night except that the sea rises three times over the people of the earth, seeking permission from Allah Almighty to overwhelm them—meaning to flood—and Allah Almighty restrains it."' I said: 'I also saw in the dream as though I had the banner, and that the people of the city were walking with me while I was in front of them.' Abu Salih said: 'If your dream is true, you will surely attain the reward of this city tonight.' He said: Abu Salih had been keeping his distance from me before that, but then he seemed to trust me and began to talk to me. He said: 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ advised us that we should form a partnership of three: a man who sells on our behalf, a man who goes on military expeditions, and a man who brings us provisions. This is my turn, so I am now returning to the city.'

✧ On what basis is the jizya taken from the Magians when they are not People of the Book? Al-Mustawrid ؓ stood up to him, seized him by the collar, and said: O enemy of God, do you criticize Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ? He took him to the palace, and Ali ؓ came out to them and said: Al-bada' — Sufyan said: he means, 'Sit down.' So they sat in the shade of the palace. He told him what he had said, and Ali ؓ said: I am the most knowledgeable of people about the Magians. They had knowledge which they taught and a book which they studied. Their king became drunk one day and fell upon his daughter or his sister. Some of the people of his kingdom observed him, and when he sobered up they came to impose the prescribed punishment on him, but he refused them and summoned the people of his kingdom and said: Do you know of a religion better than the religion of Adam? He used to marry his sons to his daughters, and I am upon the religion of Adam, so what would make you averse to his religion? So they pledged allegiance to him and fought those who opposed them until they were killed. When morning came, their book had been taken up by night and removed from among them, and the knowledge that was in their breasts was gone. Thus they are People of the Book, and the Messenger of God ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar ؓ took the jizya from them.

✧ We raided with Salman b. Rabi'ah to Balanjar and besieged its people. While we were doing so, Salman was struck by a stone that hit his head. He said: "If I die, bury me at the base of this city wall." He died, so we buried him where he said. We besieged its people and conquered the city, taking many captives and much wealth. One of our men got a thousand dirhams or more. When we set out to return, we reached a place called al-Sadd, and we could not pass through it until we went inland via the sea. We came out at Muqan, Jilan, and al-Daylam. We did not pass by any people except that they asked us for peace and gave us hostages, until the people despaired of us here—meaning in Kufah—and wept for us, and poets composed verses about us. Abdullah b. Salam ؓ bought a Jewish woman for seven hundred dirhams. When he passed by the Exilarch, he stopped at his place. Abdullah said: "O Exilarch, would you like an old woman from your people? Buy her from me." He said: "Yes." Abdullah said: "I took her for seven hundred dirhams." He said: "You may have a profit of seven hundred dirhams." He (Abdullah) said: "I said: No." The Exilarch said: "Then I have no need of her." I said: "By Allah, you will take her for what she cost, or you will disbelieve in the religion you follow." He said: "By Allah, I will never buy her from you for anything." Abdullah b. Salam ؓ said to him: "Come close." He came close, and Abdullah recited to him what is in the Torah: "You will not find a slave from the Children of Israel except that you buy him for what he cost and set him free." And: "If they come to you as captives, you ransom them, though expelling them is forbidden to you. Do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part?"—the verse. He said: "By Allah, I will buy her from you for what she cost." Abdullah said: "I swear not to reduce her below four thousand dirhams." He brought him four thousand dirhams, and Abdullah returned two thousand dirhams to him and took two thousand.
