وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بِهَذَا. ( 90 ) وَسَيَأْتِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى فِي فَضْلِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَشْيَاءُ مِنْ هَذَا.

كَانَ عُمَر بْن الْخَطَّابِ ؓ إِذَا صَلَّى صَلَاة جَلَسَ لِلنَّاسِ لِمَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ حَاجَة فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِأَحَد حَاجَةً قَامَ فَدَخَلَ قَالَ فَصَلَّى صَلَوَاتٍ لَا يَجْلِسُ لِلنَّاسِ فِيهِنَّ قَالَ ابْن عَبَّاس ؓ فَحَضَّرَتِ الْبَابَ فَقُلْت يَا يَرْفَأُ أَبِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ شَكَاة قَالَ مَا بِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ شَكْوَى فَجَلَسَتْ فَجَاءَ عُثْمَان بْن عَفَّان ؓ فَجَلَسَ فَخَرَجَ يَرْفَأُ فَقَالَ قُمْ يَا ابْن عَفَّان قُمْ يَا ابْن عَبَّاس فَدَخَلَا عَلَى عُمَر ؓ فَإِذَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ صَبْر مِنْ مَال عَلَى كُلِّ صَبْرَةٍ مِنْهَا كَتِف فَقَالَ عُمَر ؓ إِنِّي نَظَرْت فِي أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَوَجَدَتْكُمَا مَنْ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلهَا عَشِيرَة فَخِذًا هَذَا الْمَال فَاقْسِمَاهُ فَمَا كَانَ مِنْ فَضْلٍ فَرَدَّا قَالَ فَأَمَّا عُثْمَان ؓ فَحَثًّا وَأَمَّا أَنَا فَجَثَوْت عَلَى رُكْبَتِي فَقُلْت وَإِنْ كَانَ نُقْصَانًا رَدَدْت عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ شَنْشَنَة مَنْ أَخْشَنَ يَعْنِي حَجْرًا مِنْ جَبَل أَمَّا كَانَ هَذَا عِنْدَ اللهِ إِذْ مُحَمَّد ﷺ وَأَصْحَابه يَأْكُلُونَ الْقَدّ فَقُلْت بَلَى وَاللهُ لَقَدْ كَانَ هَذَا عِنْدَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمُحَمَّد ﷺ حَيّ وَلَوْ عَلَيْهِ فَتْح لِصُنْعِ فِيهِ غَيْر الَّذِي تَصْنَعُ فَغَضِبَ عُمَر ؓ وَقَالَ
Translation
✧ And Ibn Abi Umar said: Sufyan narrated to us with this. (90) And there will come, if Allah Almighty wills, in the virtue of Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ some things of this.
The text that “the like of it” refers to
Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ, when he prayed a prayer, would sit for the people for whoever had a need. If no one had a need, he would rise and enter. He (the narrator) said: He prayed prayers in which he did not sit for the people. Ibn Abbas ؓ said: I came to the door and said: O Yarfa, is there a complaint from the Commander of the Believers? He said: There is no complaint from the Commander of the Believers. So I sat, and Uthman b. Affan ؓ came and sat. Yarfa came out and said: Rise, O Ibn Affan; rise, O Ibn Abbas. They entered upon Umar ؓ, and behold, before him were heaps of wealth, upon each heap a shoulder (of meat). Umar ؓ said: I looked into the people of Madinah and found you two among the most numerous of its people in kinsfolk. Take this wealth and divide it; whatever is surplus, return it. He said: As for Uthman ؓ, he scooped, but as for me, I knelt on my knees and said: And if there is a deficit, will you return to us? He said: A chip from a rough stone, meaning a stone from a mountain. Was this not with Allah when Muhammad ﷺ and his companions used to eat the leather? I said: Yes, by Allah, this was with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, while Muhammad ﷺ was alive; and if it had been opened to him, he would have done with it other than what you are doing. So Umar ؓ became angry and said
