✧ Rafi' b. Khadij ؓ was struck on the day of Uhud in his chest with an arrow. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Remove the arrow.' He said: 'If you wish, I will remove the arrow and the cotton, and if you wish, I will remove the arrow and leave the cotton, and I will testify for you on the Day of Resurrection that you are a martyr.' I said: 'Remove the arrow and leave the cotton, and testify for me on the Day of Resurrection that I am a martyr.' He said: 'Yes.' So he removed the arrow and left the cotton, and he lived through the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr and 'Umar and 'Uthman ؓ. When it was the time of Mu'awiyah ؓ or after him, he died after 'Asr. They wanted to take him out [for burial], but Ibn 'Umar ؓ said: 'A man like Rafi' b. Khadij should not be taken out until the people of the surrounding villages are informed.' So he sat [unburied] until the next day. When the next day came, he was taken out. A female client of his wept at the edge of the grave, so Ibn 'Umar ؓ said: 'The old man cannot bear the punishment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, from this foolish woman,' or words to that effect.
