Al-'Irbad said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the morning prayer one day, then he turned to face us and admonished us with an eloquent exhortation that made the eyes shed tears and the hearts tremble. Someone said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it were the exhortation of one bidding farewell, so what do you entrust to us?" He said, "I enjoin upon you the fear of Allah, and hearing and obeying, even if he is an Abyssinian slave. For whoever lives among you will see much disagreement. You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided, guided caliphs. Hold fast to it and bite upon it with the molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."

✧ I heard al-'Irbad b. Sariyah al-Sulami say: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us one morning and admonished us with an exhortation that made the hearts tremble and the eyes shed tears.' He said: 'We said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have admonished us with the exhortation of one bidding farewell, so entrust to us." He said, "You must have the fear of Allah—I think he said—and hearing and obeying. And after me you will see severe or much disagreement. You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Bite upon it with the molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every innovation is misguidance." And among them is Ma'bad b. 'Abd Allah b. Hisham al-Qurashi, but the route to him is not according to the condition of this book, so I left it. I have been exhaustive to some extent in authenticating this hadith as far as my effort allowed, and it has been written as Shu'bah, the imam of the imams of hadith, said about the hadith of 'Abd Allah b. 'Ata' from 'Uqbah b. 'Amir when he sought it in Basra, Kufa, Madinah, and Makkah, then the hadith returned to Shahr b. Hawshab, so he abandoned it. Then Shu'bah said: "If such a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were authenticated for me, it would be dearer to me than my father, my son, and all the people." And this hadith is authentic, praise be to Allah, and may Allah bless Muhammad and his family all together.

He (the narrator) said: I met Shaddad b. Aws and told him the hadith of 'Awf b. Malik. He said, “'Awf spoke the truth. Shall I inform you of the first of that to be lifted?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Khushu' (humility), until you will not see anyone humble.” This is sahih, and the two Shaykhs have used all its narrators as proof. He said, "Yes, for it is not permissible for me to speak except the truth." So let the seeker of this knowledge know that no one ever narrated in the lifetime of Amr ibn Shu'aib except Muslim, who heard from Shu'aib through Abdullah ibn Amr. And when a hadith is narrated from Amr ibn Shu'aib from Mujahid from Abdullah ibn Amr, then it is an authentic hadith, although I have mentioned it as a witness to the hadith of Abdul Wahid ibn Qays, and this same hadith has been narrated verbatim from Yusuf ibn Mahak.

Then he would come out and see me, and say: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what brought you? Why did you not send for me so that I could come to you? ✧ The last thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined upon us was that he said: “Hold fast to the Book of Allah. You will return to a people who love to hear hadith from me—or a similar word—so whoever has memorized something, let him narrate it, and whoever attributes to me what I did not say, let him take his seat in the Fire.” The narrators of this hadith, down to the last of them, are reliable and may be used as proof. As for Abu Musa Malik b. 'Ubadah al-Ghafiqi, he is a Companion who resided in Egypt. This hadith is among what we have transmitted from a Companion when the chain to him is sound, though Wada'ah al-Juhani also narrated from Malik b. 'Ubadah al-Ghafiqi. This hadith has combined two rare expressions: one is his saying, “You will return to a people who love to hear hadith from me,” and the other is, “Whoever has memorized something, let him narrate it.” A group of the imams of Islam held that a narrator may not narrate what he does not memorize. They did not include it. Its narrators are reliable and may be used as proof, and Abu Musa Malik b. 'Ubadah is a Companion.

✧ The Prophet ﷺ detained a man from his tribe on suspicion. A man from his tribe came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon and said: 'O Muhammad, why do you detain my neighbor?' The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. Then he said: 'Some people say that you forbid evil but you delight in it.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What do you say?' So I began to interpose between them with speech, fearing that he would understand it and supplicate against my people with a supplication after which they would never prosper. The Prophet ﷺ continued until he understood it, then said: 'Have they said that? Or is the one saying it among them? By Allah, if I did that, it would be upon them as it was upon them. Release his neighbors.' And the discussion has already been mentioned in the scroll of Bahz b. Hakim, which suffices from repeating it, although the supporting evidences for this hadith are extracted in the two Sahihs. Among them is the hadith of al-A'mash from Abu Wa'il from 'Abdullah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed a distribution, and a man from the Ansar said, 'This is a distribution by which the Face of Allah is not intended.' Among them is the hadith of Malik from Ishaq b. 'Abdullah b. Abi Talha from Anas: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was wearing a Najrani cloak with a thick border. A bedouin pulled his cloak... the hadith. Among them is the hadith of Sharik b. 'Abdullah b. Abi Namir from Anas in the story of Hunayn: 'Why do you compel me to this tree?' and other than this, which would take long to mention.
