✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, which land is worst? He said: "I do not know." When Gabriel came to him, he said: "O Gabriel, which land is worst?" He said: I do not know until I ask my Lord. Gabriel departed and remained as long as Allah willed him to remain, then he came and said: O Muhammad, you asked me which land is worst, and I said I do not know, and I asked my Lord, saying: Which land is worst? He said: "Its marketplaces." Both [al-Bukhari and Muslim] have adduced as evidence all the narrators of this hadith except Abdullah b. Muhammad b. Aqil, while al-Bukhari alone has adduced as evidence Abu Hudhayfa. This hadith is a foundational principle for the scholar's saying 'I do not know,' and it has a corroborating witness from Abdullah b. Muhammad b. Aqil. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
