✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, I said to a man from the Ansar: Come, let us ask the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for today they are many. He said: How strange of you, O Ibn 'Abbas! Do you think people will need you when among the people are the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: So I left that and began to ask the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If a hadith from a man reached me, I would go to his door while he was taking a midday nap, and I would use my cloak as a pillow at his door, with the wind blowing dust upon me. Then he would come out and see me, and say: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what brought you? Why did you not send for me so that I could come to you? I would say: No, I am more deserving of coming to you. He said: So I would ask him about the hadith. That Ansari man lived until he saw me with people gathered around me asking me questions, and he would say: This young man was wiser than me.
