✧ We came to al-'Irbad b. Sariyah, who was among those about whom it was revealed: 'Nor upon those who, when they came to you so that you might provide them with mounts, you said, "I find nothing upon which to mount you," they turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears out of grief that they could not find anything to spend' [al-Tawbah 92]. We greeted him and said, 'We have come to you as visitors and seekers of knowledge.' Al-'Irbad said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the morning prayer one day, then he turned to face us and admonished us with an eloquent exhortation that made the eyes shed tears and the hearts tremble. Someone said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it were the exhortation of one bidding farewell, so what do you entrust to us?" He said, "I enjoin upon you the fear of Allah, and hearing and obeying, even if he is an Abyssinian slave. For whoever lives among you will see much disagreement. You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided, guided caliphs. Hold fast to it and bite upon it with the molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."
