✧ I used to write everything I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, wanting to memorize it. Then Quraysh forbade me and said: You write everything you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a human who speaks in pleasure and anger? He said: So I stopped, and I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Write, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing comes out from him except truth. And he pointed with his hand to his mouth. The narrators of this hadith have been relied upon by both al-Bukhari and Muslim, all of them except this al-Walid. I think he is al-Walid b. Abi al-Walid al-Shami, for he is al-Walid b. 'Abdullah, and his father is known to have been a scribe. If that is the case, then Muslim has relied upon him. It has been authentically reported from the Commander of the Believers, 'Umar b. al-Khattab, that he said: Restrain knowledge with writing. If al-Walid is Ibn Abi al-Walid al-Shami, then the hadith meets Muslim's criterion.
