✧ The Prophet ﷺ went out at an hour when he usually did not go out and no one would meet him. Abū Bakr came to him, and he said: “What brought you, O Abū Bakr?” He said: “I came out to meet the Messenger of God ﷺ, to look at his face, and to greet him.” Before long, ʿUmar came, and he said: “What brought you, O ʿUmar?” He said: “Hunger, O Messenger of God.” He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘And I have felt some of that too.’” They went to the house of Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān al-Anṣārī, who had many palm trees and sheep, but no servants. They did not find him, so they said to his wife: “Where is your husband?” She said: “He has gone to fetch fresh water for us.” Before long, Abū al-Haytham came with a water-skin, carrying it, and set it down. Then he came and embraced the Prophet ﷺ, offering his father and mother as ransom for him. Then he took them to his garden, spread a carpet for them, and went to a palm tree. He brought a cluster of dates and put it down. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Could you not have selected ripe dates for us?” He said: “O Messenger of God, I wanted you to choose, or he said: ‘to select, from its ripe and unripe dates.’” They ate and drank from that water. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “This, by the One in whose hand is my soul, is part of the bliss about which you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection: cool shade, good ripe dates, and cold water.” Abū al-Haytham went to prepare food for them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not slaughter a milking animal.” He said: “So he slaughtered a young goat or kid for them, brought it, and they ate.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you have a servant?” He said: “No.” He said: “When captives come to us, come to us.” Later, the Prophet ﷺ was brought two captives, with no third. Abū al-Haytham came to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said: “Choose one of them.” He said: “O Prophet of God, choose for me.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “The one consulted is entrusted. Take this one, for I saw him praying, and treat him well.” Abū al-Haytham went to his wife and told her what the Messenger of God ﷺ said. She said: “You will not fully do what the Prophet ﷺ said about him unless you free him.” He said: “Then he is free.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “God has not sent any prophet or appointed any caliph without his having two types of close associates: one that commands him to do good and forbids him from evil, and one that does not spare any effort to corrupt him. Whoever is protected from the evil entourage is truly protected.”

I invited those he named and whoever I met.” I said to Anas: “How many were they?” He said: “He mentioned a word meaning about a hundred.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Let them sit in groups of ten, and let each person eat from what is nearest to him.” They ate until they were full. One group went out and another came in. He said to me: “O Anas, lift it up.” So I lifted it, and I do not know whether it was more when I lifted it or when I set it down.”
