✧ The recommended amount of food a person should consume

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ الْكِنْدِيِّ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَا مَلَأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ حَسْبُ الْآدَمِيِّ لُقْمَاتٌ يُقِمْنَ صُلْبَهُ فَإِنْ غَلَبَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ» ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً مَعْنَاهَا فَثُلُثٌ طَعَامٌ وَثُلُثٌ شَرَابٌ وَثُلُثٌ لِلنَّفَسِ خَالَفَهُ بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ

Translation

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “No human being fills a vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to have a few morsels to keep his back straight. But if his self overcomes him—” then he mentioned a word whose meaning is: “—then a third for food, a third for drink, and a third for breath.” Baqiyyah b. al-Walid disagreed with him.
