أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الزُّبَيْدِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يُحَدِّثُ

أَنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَرْسَلَ إِلَى نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ مَلَكًا مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَمَعَهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ الْمَلَكُ إِنَّ اللهَ يُخَيِّرُكَ بَيْنَ أَنْ تَكُونَ عَبْدًا نَبِيًّا وَبَيْنَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مَلَكًا فَالْتَفَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى جِبْرِيلَ كَالْمُسْتَشِيرِ فَأَشَارَ جِبْرِيلُ بِيَدِهِ أَنْ تَوَاضَعَ فَقَالِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «بَلْ أَكُونُ عَبْدًا نَبِيًّا» قَالَ فَمَا أَكَلَ بَعْدَ تِلْكَ الْكَلِمَةِ طَعَامًا مُتَّكِئًا

✧ Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent to His Prophet ﷺ an angel from among the angels, and Jibril was with him. The angel said: 'Allah gives you the choice between being a servant-prophet and being a king-prophet.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to Jibril as if seeking his counsel, and Jibril gestured with his hand that he should be humble. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Rather, I will be a servant-prophet.' He said: After that word, he never ate food reclining.
