أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَابِرُ بْنُ صُبْحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُثَنَّى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْخُزَاعِيُّ قَالَ

حَدَّثَنِي جَدِّي أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ مَخْشِيٍّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَى رَجُلًا يَأْكُلُ وَلَمْ يُسَمِّ فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي آخِرِ لُقْمَةٍ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَا زَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ يَأْكُلُ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا سَمَّى قَاءَ الشَّيْطَانُ مَا أَكَلَ»

✧ My grandfather Umayyah b. Makhshiyy, who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man eating without mentioning Allah's name. When he was on the last morsel, he said: "In the name of Allah, its beginning and its end." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "The Shaytan kept eating with him, but when he mentioned Allah's name, the Shaytan vomited what he had eaten."
