أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ عَنْ بَحِيرٍ عَنْ خَالِدٍ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ قَالَ

إِنَّ الْأَنْصَارَ اقْتَرَعُوا مَنَازِلَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ يُؤْوِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَرَعَهُمْ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فَأَوَى إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ إِذَا أُهْدِيَ إِلَيْهِ طَعَامٌ أَهْدَى إِلَيْهِ فَأَتَى أَبُو أَيُّوبَ أَهْلَهُ فَوَجَدَ قَصْعَةً فِيهَا بَقْلٌ وَبَصَلٌ أَرْسَلَ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَطَلَعَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ بِمَا فِي الْقَصْعَةِ الَّتِي أُهْدِيَتْ لَنَا؟ قَالَ «رَأَيْتُ فِيهَا بَصَلًا» قَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ أَوَلَا يَحِلُّ الْبَصَلُ؟ قَالَ بَلْ فَكُلُوهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّهُ يَغْشَانِي مَا لَا يَغْشَاكُمْ خَالَفَهُ جَابِرُ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ

Translation

✧ The Ansar cast lots for their houses as to which of them would host the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Ayyub won the lot, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with him. Whenever food was gifted to him, he would send it to him. Abu Ayyub came to his family and found a large bowl containing greens and onions. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent it back. Abu Ayyub went up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “What prevented you from the bowl that was gifted to us?” He said, “I saw onions in it.” Abu Ayyub said, “Is onion not lawful?” He said, “Yes, so eat it.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I am visited by what does not visit you.” Jabir b. Samurah disagreed with him.
