✧ Uthman b. Affan ؓ bought a garden from a man, and he bargained with him until the price was settled. Then he said: Give me your hand. He said: They would not conclude a sale except by a hand-clasp. When the seller saw that, he said: No, by God, I will not sell it until you increase me ten thousand. Uthman turned to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf ؓ and said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: God, Exalted, will admit into Paradise a man who is easy-going when selling, buying, judging, and collecting. Then he said: Take the ten thousand so that I may deserve this word which I heard from the Prophet.

✧ Uthman b. Affan ؓ came as a pilgrim, and when he finished his hajj, he came to some land at al-Ta'if, and there was a piece of land adjacent to his land which he sought to buy. The difference between them in price was ten thousand. When Uthman ؓ placed his foot in the stirrup, he said to a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ: Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say: May God have mercy on a servant who is easy-going in selling, easy-going in buying, easy-going in settling, easy-going in collecting? The man said: Yes. So Uthman ؓ said: Bring the man back to me. Then he gave him the ten thousand and took the land.

I hope to meet God Almighty on the Day of Resurrection with no one seeking anything from me, that I wronged him in wealth, blood, or honor except by his right. ✧ I left the mosque and found a man calling behind me: Raise your lower garment, for it is more reverent to your Lord and purer for your garment, and trim your hair if you are a Muslim. So I walked behind him while he wore a lower garment and a cloak and carried a whip. I said: Who is this? It was said: Ali, the Commander of the Faithful... Then he mentioned the hadith, and in it: Then he came to a cloth merchant's house and said: O sheikh, be fair in my purchase of a shirt for three dirhams. When he recognized him, he did not sell him anything. Then he came to another, and when he recognized him, he did not sell him anything. Then he came to a young boy and bought from him a shirt for three dirhams, and he wore it between the wrists and the ankles. The owner of the garment came, and it was said: Your son sold a shirt to the Commander of the Faithful for three dirhams. He said: Why didn't you take two dirhams from him? So he took the dirham, then brought it to Ali ؓ while he was sitting with the Muslims, and said: Keep this dirham. He said: What is its matter? He said: The shirt was worth two dirhams—meaning my son sold it to you for three dirhams. He ؓ said: He sold me with my consent, and he took with his consent.

✧ A man had land, and another man said to him: Would you like me to sharecrop with you, so that whatever Allah brings forth is divided between me and you? He said: Yes, until I ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He went to Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ, and they said: Ask the Prophet ﷺ. He asked him, and he did not reply to him at all. He said to them: He ﷺ did not reply to me at all! They said to him: Go ahead, for if it were forbidden he would have prohibited you from it. So he sharecropped with him until his crop swayed or turned green, and it was on the way of the Prophet ﷺ. He passed by it one day and said: Whose land is this? They said: It belongs to so-and-so; so-and-so sharecropped it. He ﷺ said: Summon them both! ✧ Mu'adh b. Jabal ؓ was a generous, young, handsome man, one of the finest youths of his people. He would not hold onto anything, and he kept borrowing until he had consumed all his wealth in debt. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him to request his creditors to reduce the debt for him, but they refused. If they would have left anything for anyone on account of anyone, they would have left it for Mu'adh ؓ on account of the Prophet ﷺ. So the Prophet ﷺ sold all his property to pay off his debt, until Mu'adh ؓ stood with nothing. Then, in the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ sent him as a governor over a group of the people of Yemen, to compensate him. Mu'adh ؓ remained in Yemen as a governor—and he was the first to trade with the wealth of Allah, the Exalted—and he remained until he acquired wealth, and until the Prophet ﷺ passed away. When he returned, 'Umar said to Abu Bakr ؓ: 'Send for this man and leave him what is enough for his living, and take the rest.' Abu Bakr ؓ said: 'The Prophet ﷺ sent him only to compensate him, and I will not take anything from him unless he gives it to me.' So 'Umar ؓ went to him, when Abu Bakr ؓ did not comply with him, and 'Umar mentioned that to Mu'adh ؓ. Mu'adh ؓ said: 'The Prophet ﷺ sent me to compensate me, and I will not do it.' Then Mu'adh met 'Umar ؓ and said: 'I have obeyed you, and I will do what you commanded me. I saw in a dream that I was in a pool of water and feared drowning, and you saved me from it, O 'Umar.' So Mu'adh came to Abu Bakr ؓ and mentioned that to him, and he swore that he had not hidden anything from him, until his whip was made clear to him. Abu Bakr ؓ said: 'By Allah, I will not take it from you; I have given it to you as a gift.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'Now it is good and lawful.' Then Mu'adh ؓ went out to Syria.
