✧ Ikrimah, the freedman of Ibn Abbas ؓ, came to Basra and we sat with him in the congregational mosque. He said: "Will you not forbid this old man of yours—meaning al-Hasan b. Abi al-Hasan—who claims that what people exchange hand to hand, silver for silver and gold for gold, is forbidden, while I testify that Ibn Abbas ؓ permitted it?" Abu Sa'id said: I said to him: "Woe to you! Do you not know that I was sitting at his head and you at his feet when a man came and stood before you. I said: 'What do you need?' He said: 'I want to ask Ibn Abbas ؓ about gold for gold.' I said: 'Go, for he claims there is no harm in it.' He uncovered his turban from his face, then Ibn Abbas ؓ sat up and said: 'I seek forgiveness from Allah. By Allah, I used to think that whatever Muslims exchange hand to hand is lawful, until I heard Abd Allah b. Umar and Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ preserve from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what I did not preserve. I seek forgiveness from Allah.'"
