✧ I attended a funeral in which the Prophet ﷺ was present. When it was placed, the Prophet ﷺ asked: 'Does he owe a debt?' They said: 'Yes.' So he turned away from it and said ﷺ: 'Pray over your companion!' When 'Ali ؓ saw him turn away, he said: 'O Prophet of God, he is free of his debt; I am guarantor for what he owes.' So the Prophet ﷺ came and prayed over him, then he left and said: 'O 'Ali, may God and Islam reward you well. May God release your pledge on the Day of Resurrection as you released the pledge of your Muslim brother. There is no servant who pays off his brother's debt except that God releases his pledge on the Day of Resurrection.' A man from the Ansar stood and said: 'O Messenger of God, is this for 'Ali specifically?' He ﷺ said: 'No, rather for all Muslims.'
