✧ Lending and the Warning against Taking on Debt and Encouragement of Patience with the Insolvent

وَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَمَّارٌ، ثَنَا يُوسُفُ - هُوَ ابْنُ عَطِيَّةَ - ثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ - ؓ قَالَ:
إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا، قَالَ: هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ. قَالَ ﷺ: فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ - عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ - نَهَانِي أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مَنْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ. ثُمَّ قَالَ ﷺ: إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الدَّيْنِ مُرْتَهَنٌ فِي قَبْرِهِ حَتَّى يُقْضَى عَنْهُ
Translation

✧ The Prophet ﷺ was brought a funeral to pray over it. He said: 'Does he owe a debt?' They said: 'Yes.' He ﷺ said: 'Gabriel — peace and blessings be upon him — forbade me from praying over anyone who owes a debt.' Then he ﷺ said: 'The debtor is held in pledge in his grave until it is paid off for him.'
