✧ Lending and the Warning against Taking on Debt and Encouragement of Patience with the Insolvent

حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ، ثَنَا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُتْبَةَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ - ؓ

ذَكَرَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا تُوُفِّيَ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ ﷺ وَتَرَكَ دِينَارَيْنِ دَيْنًا عَلَيْهِ، وَلَيْسَ لَهُ وَفَاءٌ، فَأَبَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، وَقَالَ: صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ !، فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ ؓ وَقَالَ: أَنَا أَقْضِي عَنْهُ. فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

Translation

✧ He mentioned that a man died during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ and left behind two dinars as a debt, and he had no means to pay it. The Messenger of God ﷺ refused to pray over him and said: 'Pray over your companion!' Abu Qatadah ؓ stood up and said: 'I will pay it on his behalf.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ stood and prayed over him.
