✧ I saw the Prophet ﷺ at the mosque of al-Khayf, and his companions said to me: 'Move aside, O Wathilah,' meaning, 'Move away from the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Leave him; he has only come to ask.' He said: 'So I drew near and said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling about a matter we will take from you after you are gone?' He ﷺ said: 'Let your own self give you a ruling.' I said: 'How can I do that?' He ﷺ said: 'Leave what causes you doubt for what does not cause you doubt, even if the muftis give you rulings.' I said: 'How can I do that?' He ﷺ said: 'Place your hand on your heart, for the heart finds tranquility in the lawful and does not find tranquility in the unlawful. Indeed, the piety of a Muslim is to leave the small (sin) for fear of falling into the large (sin).' I said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, who is the greedy?' He ﷺ said: 'The one who seeks gain from other than its lawful means.' I said: 'Who is the pious?' He ﷺ said: 'The one who stops at the doubtful.' I said: 'Who is the believer?' He ﷺ said: 'The one whom people trust with their blood.' I said: 'Who is the Muslim?' He ﷺ said: 'The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.' I said: 'Which jihad is best?' He ﷺ said: 'A word of truth in the presence of a tyrannical ruler.'
