✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the mosque of al-Khayf, and his companions said to me: "Come here, O Wathilah — that is, move away from his face." But he ﷺ said: "Leave him, for he has only come to ask." So I drew near and said: "May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling about a matter we will take from you after you are gone." He ﷺ said: "Consult your own self." I said: "How can I do that?" He ﷺ said: "Leave what makes you doubtful for what does not make you doubtful, even if the muftis give you fatwas." I said: "How can I know that?" He ﷺ said: "Put your hand on your heart, for the heart is at peace with the lawful and is not at peace with the unlawful. Indeed, the piety of a Muslim is to leave the minor for fear of falling into the major." I said: "Then who is the covetous?" He ﷺ said: "The one who seeks earnings from unlawful sources." I said: "Then who is the scrupulous?" He ﷺ said: "The one who stops at the doubtful." I said: "Then who is the believer?" He ﷺ said: "The one whom people trust with their wealth and their lives." I said: "Then who is the Muslim?" He ﷺ said: "The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe." I said: "Then which jihad is best?" He ﷺ said: "A word of truth in the presence of a tyrannical ruler."
