13. Fasting
✧ "No servant fasts one day in the way of Allah except that Allah distances his face from the Fire by that day seventy autumns."
✧ "Whoever spends a pair of anything in the way of Allah is called from the gates of Paradise: 'O servant of Allah, this is good.' Paradise has gates. Whoever is from the people of prayer is called from the gate of prayer. Whoever is from the people of jihad is called from the gate of jihad. Whoever is from the people of charity is called from the gate of charity. Whoever is from the people of fasting is called from the gate of al-Rayyan." He said: Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, no one is under any compulsion in which of them he is called from; will everyone be called from all of them, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes, and I hope you will be among them."
✧ "Whoever spends a pair in the way of Allah is called from the gates of Paradise. Paradise has gates. Whoever is from the people of prayer is called from the gates of prayer. Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, no one is under any compulsion in which of them he is called from; will anyone be called from all of them, O Messenger of Allah?"
In Paradise there is a gate which is called Rayyan through which only the people who fast would enter on the Day on Resurrection. None else would enter along with them. It would be proclaimed: Where are the people who fast that they should be admitted into it? And when the last of them would enter, it would be closed and no one would enter it. (Using translation from Muslim 1152)
✧ "In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyan, prepared for those who fast. When the last of them enters, it is closed."

✧ "Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; fasting is for Me and I reward it. The changed breath of the fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk."

✧ Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting, for it is for Me and I reward it. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the changed breath of the fasting person is more pleasant to Allah on the Day of Resurrection than the scent of musk. The fasting person has two joys: when he breaks his fast he rejoices in his breaking it, and when he meets Allah he rejoices in his fasting.
✧ On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Every good deed that the son of Adam performs is multiplied from ten good deeds up to seven hundredfold. Allah says: 'Except for fasting, for it is Mine and I shall reward it. He gives up his food for My sake, his drink for My sake, and his desire for My sake, and I shall reward it. The fasting person has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast and a joy when he meets his Lord. And the changed breath of the mouth of the fasting person when it changes due to food is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk.'"
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prepared an army, so I came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for martyrdom for me. He said: "O Allah, grant them safety and spoils." So we went on a military expedition and we were safe and obtained spoils, until he mentioned that three times. He said: Then I came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I came to you repeatedly three times asking you to supplicate for martyrdom for me, and you said: "O Allah, grant them safety and spoils," and we were safe and obtained spoils. O Messenger of Allah, so command me with a deed by which I may enter Paradise. He said: "You must fast, for there is nothing like it." He said: So Abu Umamah would never be seen with smoke in his house during the day unless a guest came to them. When they saw smoke during the day, they knew that a guest had come upon them.
✧ I said: O Messenger of Allah, guide me to a deed. He said: "You must fast, for there is nothing equal to it."
✧ "Fasting is a shield."
✧ "Three people's supplications are not rejected: the fasting person until he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the supplication of the oppressed."
✧ "Whoever gives a fasting person something to break his fast with, the like of his reward is written for him, without diminishing anything from the fasting person's reward."
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her, and she called for food for him. He said: "Come and eat." She said: I am fasting. He said: "When food is eaten in the presence of a fasting person, the angels send blessings upon him."

Fasting is a shield. So whoever is fasting should not engage in obscene talk or act ignorantly. If someone insults him or harms him, let him say: 'I am fasting, I am fasting.'"

✧ "When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the rebellious devils among the jinn are chained, the gates of the Fire are closed so that no gate among them is opened, the gates of Paradise are opened so that no gate among them is closed, and a caller calls out: 'O seeker of good, come forward! O seeker of evil, desist!' And Allah has those freed from the Fire, and that is every night."

And he said: "The dawn is not that it says thus and thus"—and he struck his hand and raised it—"until it says thus," and he spread his fingers apart.

They informed us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up junub without having had a wet dream, then he would fast. Then we entered upon Marwan b. al-Hakam and informed him of their statement and of the statement of Abu Hurayrah. Marwan said: 'I adjure you both to go to Abu Hurayrah and inform him.'
✧ None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before it or after it.

✧ Ibn Abbas and some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Umm Salamah to ask her about which days the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted most. She said: Saturday and Sunday. I returned to them and informed them, and they seemed to reject that. So they all went to her and said: We sent this one to you about such-and-such, and he mentioned that you said such-and-such. She said: He spoke the truth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ most often fasted Saturday and Sunday, and he used to say: They are two festivals for the polytheists, and I want to differ from them.
✧ Do you see this hand of mine? I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it, and I heard him say: Do not fast on Saturday except in what has been made obligatory upon you; and if one of you finds nothing but the bark of a tree, let him break his fast with it.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe I'tikaf during the middle ten days of the month, and after the twentieth (day of the month), he would come out on the twenty-first and go back to his home, and those who were observing I'tikaf with him would go back like him. Then he stayed one month on the night when he used to go back home, and he addressed the people and enjoined upon them whatever Allah (SWT) willed. Then he said: 'I used to observe I'tikaf during these ten days, then I decided to spend the last ten days in I'tikaf. So whoever was observing I'tikaf with me, let him stay in his place of I'tikaf, for I was shown this night (Lailatul Qadr), then I was caused to forget it, so seek it during the last ten nights on the odd-numbered nights. And I saw myself prostrating in water and mud.'" Abu Sa'eed said: "It rained on the night of the twenty-first, and the roof of the Masjid leaked over the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray. I looked at him when he had finished praying subh and his face was wet with water and mud." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1356)
✧ Some men among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ were shown Laylat al-Qadr in their dreams during the last seven nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I see that your dreams have agreed on the last seven nights, so whoever seeks it, let him seek it in the last seven nights."
The Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "Seek out the Night of Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan, and if one of you weakens or becomes unable, let him not be overwhelmed by the remaining seven nights."

Perhaps that is better for you, so seek it in the ninth, the seventh, and the fifth."

✧ I sat with Abu Dharr near the middle Jamrah and drew close to him until my knee almost touched his knees. I said: Tell me about Laylat al-Qadr. He said: I was the one who asked people about it, and I asked the Messenger of Allah. I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me about Laylat al-Qadr. Is it during the time of the prophets, when revelation descends upon them, and when they are taken, it is lifted? He said: “Rather, it remains until the Day of Resurrection.” I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me in which month it is. He said: “If Allah willed, I would have informed you of it. Seek it in the last ten nights, in one of the two sets of seven, and do not ask me about it after this time.” He then turned to his companions and began speaking with them. When I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ become engrossed in conversation, I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, to tell me in which of the two sets of seven it is. He became angry with me in a way he had never been angry before and said: “May your mother be bereft of you! It occurs in the last seven.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed iʿtikāf during the first ten days of Ramadan, then he observed iʿtikāf during the middle ten days in a Turkish tent, with a piece of matting over its doorway. He took the matting with his hand and moved it aside in the tent, then he put his head out and spoke to the people, and they drew near to him. He said: “I observed iʿtikāf during the first ten days seeking this night, then I observed iʿtikāf during the middle ten days. Then I was visited and told that it is in the last ten days. Whoever among you wishes to observe iʿtikāf, let him do so.” So the people observed iʿtikāf with him. He said: “I was shown it, and I was prostrating on its morning in mud and water.” On the morning of the twenty-first night, he got up for the dawn prayer, and the sky rained and the mosque leaked, and I saw the mud clearly when he came out after finishing the dawn prayer, with his forehead and nose in water and mud. And that was the twenty-first night of the last ten.

He (Uyainah) said: "During the twenty (nights) of Ramadan, Abu Bakrah used to perform Salat just as he performed Salat during the rest of the year. He went out to the people and said: “O people, Laylat al-Qadr was made clear to me, and I came out to tell you about it, but two men came disputing, and the devil was with them, so I was made to forget it. ✧ He said to Ubayy b. Kaʿb: Ibn Masʿūd says that whoever stands in prayer the whole year will attain Laylat al-Qadr. Ubayy said: By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it is indeed in the month of Ramadan, and he swore without making any exception. By Allah, I know that Laylat al-Qadr is this night which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to stand in prayer, the morning of the twenty-seventh. Its sign is that the sun rises on the morning of that day white, without rays, as if it were a basin.

✧ Tell me, for it pleases me to see you, and I have come only to meet you. So tell me about the Night of Qadr, as Ibn Mas'ud says: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the whole year will be affected by it or will attain it." He knew that it is in the month of Ramadan, but he preferred not to specify it for you. It is the twenty-seventh night, according to the verse that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us about. So we memorized it and recognized it. It was a clear night until the last moments before dawn. He would ascend the minaret, look at the rising of the sun, and say, "It rises without any rays until it rises high."
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, seeking Laylat al-Qadr. Then he ordered that a structure be built, but it was dismantled. Then it was made clear to him that it was in the last ten days, so he ordered that it be rebuilt. He came out to us and said, "Laylat al-Qadr was made clear to me, and I came out to make it clear to you, but two men argued and I was made to forget it. So seek it in the ninth, the seventh, and the fifth." I said, "O Abu Sa'id, you know numbers better than us. Which night is the ninth, the seventh, and the fifth?" He said, "When it is the twenty-first night, then skip a night; the one after it is the seventh. Then skip a night, and the one after it is the fifth."
