✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Prophet of Allah, how do you fast?" He said: The Prophet ﷺ became angry. When ʿUmar saw that, he said, "We are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger," and he kept repeating it until the Prophet's ﷺ anger subsided. Then he said, "O Prophet of Allah, how about one who fasts two days and breaks his fast one day?" He said, "Can anyone bear that?" He said, "Then how about one who fasts one day and breaks his fast one day?" He said, "That is the fast of my brother Dāwūd." He said, "Then how about one who fasts one day and breaks his fast two days?" He said, "I wish I were given the strength for that."
