✧ The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when a man was fasting and the time of breaking the fast came, if he slept before breaking his fast, he would not eat that night or that day until evening. Qays b. Ṣirmah was fasting, and when the time of breaking the fast came, he went to his wife and said, “Do you have any food?” She said, “No, but let me go and look for some.” That day he had been working, so sleep overcame him. His wife came and when she saw him, she said, “What a disappointment for you!” He woke up the next morning. When midday came, he fainted. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and this verse was revealed: “It has been made lawful for you, on the night of the fast, to approach your wives; they are a garment for you.” They rejoiced greatly at it. “And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn.”
