✧ "O 'Amr, fasten your weapons and your clothes tightly." He said: I did so, then I came to him and found him performing ablution. He raised his head and gave me an upward and downward look. He said: "O 'Amr, I intend to send you on an expedition, that Allah may keep you safe and grant you spoils, and I will assign you a good portion of wealth." I said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not accept Islam out of desire for wealth; I accepted Islam out of desire for jihad and to be with you. He said: "O 'Amr, how excellent is righteous wealth with a righteous man."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during the illness in which he died: "O 'A'ishah, what did you do with the gold?" She said: I said: It is with me. He said: "Bring it to me." 4. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3213Sahih

✧ If you had seen the Prophet of Allah ﷺ one day during an illness of his. He had with me six or seven dinars. She said: He ordered me to distribute them, but the pain of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distracted me until Allah cured him. She said: Then he asked me about them. I said: No, by Allah, your pain had distracted me. She said: He called for them and placed them in his palm. Then he said: "What does the Prophet of Allah think, if he meets Allah while it is with him?"

✧ "The world is green and sweet. Whoever We give something from it with a good heart from Us and good enjoyment from it, without greed, is blessed in it. Whoever We give something from it without a good heart from Us, with good enjoyment and covetousness, is not blessed in it."

  7. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3216Hasan

✧ "We are the last and the first on the Day of Resurrection. The most numerous are the lowest, except for one who says thus and thus, to his right, to his left, behind him, and in front of him, and scoops with his garment."

  9. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3218No grade recorded

✧ "Wretched is the slave of the dinar, the slave of the dirham, the slave of the velvet cloth, and the slave of the fine garment. If he is given, he is pleased; if he is denied, he is displeased."

✧ The heart of the son of Adam remains young in love of two things: length of life and wealth.

  11. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3220Sahih

✧ I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ and he gave me, then I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ and he gave me, then I asked him and he gave me, then I asked and he gave me, then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O Hakim b. Hizam, this wealth is sweet and green. Whoever takes it with a generous soul will be blessed in it, and whoever takes it with an avaricious soul will not be blessed in it, and will be like one who eats but is not satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Hakim said: I said, "O Messenger of God, by the One who sent you with the truth, I will not take anything from anyone after you until I leave this world." 'Urwah and Sa'id said: Abu Bakr would call Hakim and give him a gift, but he refused. Then 'Umar b. al-Khattab would give him, but he refused. 'Umar would say, "I call you to witness, O assembly of Muslims, regarding Hakim b. Hizam, that I offer him his right which was apportioned for him from this booty, but he refuses to take it." He said: Hakim did not take anything from any of the people after the Messenger of God ﷺ until he died.

  12. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3221Sahih

✧ "The world is green and sweet, and God will make you successors in it to see how you act. So beware of the world and beware of women, for the first trial of the Children of Israel was women."

  13. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3222Sahih

✧ "I do not fear poverty for you after me, but I fear for you competition in wealth, and I do not fear error for you, but I fear for you deliberate actions."

  14. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3223Sahih

✧ "Every nation has a trial, and the trial of my nation is wealth."

  15. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3224Sahih

✧ The last time the Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us, he prayed over the martyrs of Uhud, then mounted the pulpit, praised God and extolled Him, then said: "I am your forerunner and I am a witness over you. I am looking at my cistern now from this station of mine. By God, I do not fear that you will associate partners with God after me, but I was shown that I have been given the keys to the treasures of the earth, and I fear for you that you will compete over them."

  16. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3225Hasan

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us and said: "The most fearful thing I fear for you is what God brings out of the adornment and splendor of this world." A man said to him, "O Messenger of God, does good come with evil?" The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent. We saw that revelation was descending upon him. It was said to the man, "What is the matter with you? You speak to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he does not speak to you." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ was relieved, and he began wiping away the sweat and said, "Where is the questioner?" And we saw that he praised him, then said: "Good does not come with evil. Indeed, some of what the spring rain causes to grow kills or nearly kills by bloating, except for the eater of green plants: it eats until its flanks are full, faces the sun, then defecates and urinates, then grazes again. Wealth is sweet and green, and an excellent companion for a Muslim is the one who, from it, maintains kinship ties and spends in the way of God. The example of one who takes it without his right is like one who eats but is not satisfied, and it will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."

  17. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3226Sahih

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ stood and addressed the people, saying: "No, by God, I do not fear for you, O people, except what God brings out for you of the splendor of this world." A man said, "O Messenger of God, does good come with evil?" The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent for a while, then said, "What did you say?" He said, "I said, O Messenger of God, does good come with evil?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "Good does not come except with good. But it is that everything the spring rain causes to grow kills by bloating or nearly kills, except for the eater of green plants: it eats until when its flanks are full, it faces the sun, then defecates and urinates, then chews the cud and returns to eat. Whoever takes wealth by his right will be blessed in it, and whoever takes wealth without his right, his example is like one who eats but is not satisfied."

  18. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3227Sahih

✧ While the Messenger of God ﷺ was addressing the people, he said: "Among what I fear for you is what will be opened for you of the splendor of this world and its adornment." A man stood and said, "O Messenger of God, does good come with evil?" Abu Sa'id said: We saw revelation descending upon the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we blamed the man for speaking to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he did not speak to him. When it was lifted from the Messenger of God ﷺ, he began wiping the sweat from his face, saying, "Where is the questioner?" It was as if he praised him, then he said: "Good does not come with evil. Indeed, some of what the spring rain causes to grow kills by bloating or nearly kills, except for the eater of green plants: it eats until when its flanks are full, it faces the sun, then defecates and urinates. This wealth is an excellent companion for a Muslim who takes it by his right and gives from it to the orphan, the needy, and the beggar. Whoever takes it without his right is like one who eats but is not satisfied, then it will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."

  19. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3209Sahih

✧ She used to count what she spent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: "Spend and do not count, lest Allah count against you; and do not hoard, lest Allah withhold from you."

  20. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3229Sahih

✧ "The son of Adam grows old, but two things remain young in him: greed for wealth and greed for life."

  21. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3230Sahih

✧ "The heart of an old man remains young in love of two things: love of life and love of wealth."

  22. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3231Sahih

✧ I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth, he would desire to have another similar to it. However, nothing can fill the soul of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent."

  23. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3232Sahih

✧ I arrived in Madinah, and while I was sitting in a circle that included a group of Quraysh, a man came with rough clothes, rough body, and rough face. He stood before them and said, 'Give glad tidings to the hoarders of wealth of heated stones that will be placed on the nipples of their breasts until they come out from the shoulder joints, and placed on their shoulder joints until they come out from the nipples of their breasts.' They bowed their heads, and I did not see any of them respond to him. He turned away, and I followed him until he sat by a pillar. I said, 'I see these people only disliked what you said to them.' He said, 'These people do not understand. My close friend Abu al-Qasim ﷺ called me and said, "O Abu Dharr," and I answered. He said, "Do you see Uhud?" I looked at the sun on me, thinking he would send me on an errand. He said, "It would not please me to have its equivalent in gold and spend it all except three dinars. Then these people amass worldly wealth and understand nothing."' I said, 'What about you and your brothers of Quraysh?' He said, 'No, by your Lord, I will not ask them for worldly gain, nor seek their religious opinion, until I meet Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.'

Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can)." Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)" Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own." And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise)." (Using translation from Bukhārī 46)

✧ When Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was appointed caliph, he wrote this letter for him when he sent him to Yemen: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the obligatory charity that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed upon the Muslims, which Allah commanded His Messenger. Whoever is asked for it among the Muslims in its proper manner should give it, and whoever is asked for more than that should not give it. For twenty-four camels or less, the zakah is sheep: one sheep for every five. When they reach twenty-five to thirty-five, a one-year-old female camel (bint makhad) is due. If there is no bint makhad, then a two-year-old male camel (ibn labun). When they reach thirty-six to forty-five, a two-year-old female camel (bint labun) is due. When they reach forty-six to sixty, a three-year-old female camel (hiqqah) that can be mounted by a male camel is due. When they reach sixty-one to seventy-five, a four-year-old female camel (jadha'ah) is due. When they reach seventy-six to ninety, two bint labun are due. When they reach ninety-one to one hundred and twenty, two hiqqah are due. If they exceed one hundred and twenty, then for every forty, one bint labun, and for every fifty, one hiqqah. And whoever has camels that reach the age for jadha'ah as zakah, but he does not have a jadha'ah and has a hiqqah, the hiqqah will be accepted from him, and he should add two sheep or twenty dirhams. And whoever has camels that reach the age for hiqqah as zakah, but he does not have a hiqqah and has a jadha'ah, the jadha'ah will be accepted from him, and the collector should give him twenty dirhams or two sheep. And whoever has camels that reach the age for hiqqah as zakah, but he only has a bint labun, it will be accepted from him, and he should give two sheep or twenty dirhams. And whoever has camels that reach the age for bint labun as zakah, but he only has a hiqqah, the hiqqah will be accepted from him, and the collector should give him twenty dirhams or two sheep. And whoever has camels that reach the age for bint labun as zakah, but he does not have it, a bint makhad will be accepted from him, and he should add twenty dirhams or two sheep. And whoever has camels that reach the age for bint makhad as zakah, but he does not have it and has a bint labun, the bint labun will be accepted from him, and the collector should give him twenty dirhams or two sheep. And whoever does not have a bint makhad but has an ibn labun, it will be accepted from him, and nothing else is required. And whoever has only four camels, there is no charity on them unless their owner wishes. When they reach five camels, one sheep is due. The charity on sheep: for every forty pasturing sheep up to one hundred and twenty, one sheep is due. If they exceed one hundred and twenty up to two hundred, two sheep are due. If they exceed two hundred up to three hundred, three sheep are due. If they exceed three hundred, then for every hundred, one sheep is due. No old, defective, or male goat is to be taken as charity unless the collector wishes. Separate herds should not be combined, and combined herds should not be separated for fear of charity. If two partners have mixed livestock, they should share the charity equally between them. If a man's pasturing sheep are forty minus one, there is no charity on them unless their owner wishes. On silver, one-quarter of one-tenth is due. If there is only one hundred and ninety dirhams, there is no charity on them unless their owner wishes.'

✧ I went, along with Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn, and Usama ibn Zaid, on the day of Eid. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also went to the prayer place and prayed with us. Then he delivered a sermon and said, "O people, this is a day of charity, so give in charity." A man started taking off his ring, and another man started taking off his garment. Bilal held on to them, waiting until he didn't see anyone giving anything. Then Bilal approached the women and said, "O women, this is a day of charity, so give in charity." So the women started taking off their bracelets and rings. Bilal held on to them, waiting again until he didn't see anyone giving anything. Then Bilal approached and we all moved forward.

✧ I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the lava field of Madinah in the evening, and Uhud met us. He said, "O Abu Dharr, I would not love to have Uhud in gold and spend a third night while I have a dinar of it, except a dinar which I set aside for a debt — unless I say about it regarding the servants of Allah like this and like this," meaning from in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left. Then he said, "O Abu Dharr, indeed the wealthy are the fewest on the Day of Resurrection." Then he said to me, "Do not leave until I come to you." He went off, then came in the darkness of night, and I heard a sound. I feared it might be harm to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I intended to leave. Then I remembered his words, so I sat until he came. I said to him, "I wanted to come to you, O Messenger of Allah, then I remembered your words to me, and I heard a sound." He said, "That was Jibril. He came to me and informed me that whoever of my community dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." ✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was reciting: "Competition for more distracts you" (al-Takathur, 102:1). He said, "The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth' but do you have any of your wealth except what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave in charity and sent ahead?"

✧ The sun never rises without two angels at its sides calling out, making the inhabitants of the earth hear except the two heavy ones [humans and jinn]: 'O people, come to your Lord. What is little and sufficient is better than what is abundant and distracting.' And it never sets without two angels at its sides calling out: 'O Allah, give the spender a replacement and give the withholder destruction.'

He said, "Know what you are saying." They said, "We know nothing but that, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "There is no man among you but loves the wealth of his heir more than his own wealth." They said, "How so, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Indeed, a man's wealth is what he sends ahead, and the wealth of his heir is what he leaves behind."

✧ The likeness of the miser and the giver of charity is like two men upon whom are two coats of iron, or two gardens, from their nipples to their collarbones. As for the spender, every time he gives charity and intends it, it departs from his skin until it erases his trace and surpasses his fingertips. As for the miser, every time he spends something and intends it, it sticks to him and each ring of it bites into its place, and he tries to widen it but it does not widen.

I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change when he saw their poverty. He entered and ordered Bilal, who called the adhan and then the iqamah. He came out and prayed, then he said: 'O people, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer. Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow.' 'Let a man give charity from his dinar and from his dirham and from his garment and from a sa' of his wheat and from a sa' of his barley' until he mentioned half a date. Then a man from the Ansar came with a purse that his hands could hardly hold, indeed they could not. Then people followed one another until I saw before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ two heaps of clothes and food. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ brighten until it seemed gilded. Then he said: 'Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam and it is acted upon after him, he will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without diminishing their rewards in any way. Whoever introduces an evil practice and it is acted upon after him, he will bear its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him.'

✧ Al-Aqra' and 'Uyaynah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something, so he ordered Mu'awiyah to write it for them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sealed it and ordered it to be given to them. As for 'Uyaynah, he said: 'What is in it?' He replied: 'In it is what you requested.' So he kissed it and tied it to his turban, and he was the more forbearing of the two men. As for al-Aqra', he said: 'I carry a document I do not know what is in it, like the document of al-Mutalammis.' So Mu'awiyah informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of their words. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out for his need and passed by a camel kneeling at the door of the mosque at the beginning of the day, then he passed by it at the end of the day while it was still in its place. He said: 'Where is the owner of this camel?' It was searched for but he was not found. Then he said: 'Fear Allah concerning these animals. Ride them while they are healthy, and eat them while they are fat,' as if he was annoyed a short while before. 'Indeed, whoever asks for something while he has what suffices him, then he is only increasing in coals of Hell.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what suffices him?' He said: 'What feeds him in the morning or in the evening.'

  207. Sahih Ibn Hibban 3387Sahih

✧ "No one opens a door of begging for himself, except Allah opens a door of poverty upon him. If a man takes a rope to a mountain, gathers firewood on his back, and eats from it, it is better for him than asking people, whether they give or refuse."
