✧ The Expiation

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْكَلَاعِيُّ بِحِمْصَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنِ الزُهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَمَا لَكَ»؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ » قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ » قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «هَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ » قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ آنِفًا؟ خُذْ هَذَا التَّمْرَ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَا بَتَيْهَا يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ»

✧ While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am destroyed. He said: "What is the matter with you?" He said: I fell upon my wife while I was fasting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Can you find a slave to free?" He said: No. He said: "Can you fast two consecutive months?" He said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Can you find food to feed sixty poor people?" He said: No, O Messenger of Allah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. Abu Hurayrah said: While we were in that state, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a basket containing dates, and ʿaraq is the miktal. He said: "Where is the one who asked just now? Take this dates and give it in charity." The man said: On those poorer than my family, O Messenger of Allah? By Allah, there is no household between its two lava tracts — he meant the two ḥarrahs — poorer than my household. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his canine teeth showed, then said: "Feed it to your family."
