   دُعِيَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ إِلَى خِتَانٍ فَأَبَى أَنْ يُجِيبَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: « إِنَّا كُنَّا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَا نَأْتِي الْخِتَانَ، وَلَا نُدْعَى إِلَيْهِ

   ✧ Uthman b. Abi al-As was invited to a circumcision, but he refused to attend. He was asked about that, and he said: 'During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we did not attend circumcisions, nor were we invited to them.'

   ✧ He was invited to a meal, and when he came he said: “What is this?” They said: “The circumcision of a girl.” So he stood up and did not eat, and said: “This is something we were not invited to in the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ.”

   سُئِلَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ عَنْ طَعَامِ الْعُرْسِ، فَقِيلَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مَا لِطَعَامِ الْعُرْسِ أَطْيَبَ مِنْ رِيحِ طَعَامِنَا ؟ فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « فِي طَعَامِ الْعُرْسِ مِثْقَالٌ مِنْ رِيحِ الْجَنَّةِ ». قَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: « دَعَا لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْخَلِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ وَمُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ أَنْ يُبَارَكَ فِيهِ وَيُطَيِّبَهُ

   ✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ was asked about wedding feast food, and it was said: “O Commander of the Believers, what food is more fragrant than the aroma of our food?” He said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘In wedding feast food there is a measure of the fragrance of Paradise.’” Umar ؓ said: “Ibrahim the Friend ﷺ and Muhammad ﷺ prayed for it to be blessed and made pleasant.”

   إِنَّ رَجُلًا دَعَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ إِلَى وَلِيمَةٍ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ سَمِعَ لَهْوًا، فَلَمْ يَدْخُلْ، فَقَالَ: مَا لَكَ ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « مَنْ كَثَّرَ سَوَادَ قَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ، وَمَنْ رَضِيَ عَمَلَ قَوْمٍ كَانَ شَرِيكًا لِمَنْ عَمِلَهُ

   ✧ A man invited Abdullah b. Masud ؓ to a wedding feast. When he came he heard entertainment, so he did not enter. He said: “What is wrong with you?” He said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Whoever swells the ranks of a people is one of them, and whoever approves of the action of a people is a partner of the one who did it.’”

   قُلْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ: يُكْرَهُ رَدُّ اللُّطْفِ ؟ قَالَ: « مَا أَقْبَحَهُ ! لَوْ أُهْدِيَ إِلَيَّ كُرَاعٌ لَقَبِلْتُ، وَلَوْ دُعِيتُ إِلَيْهِ لَأَجَبْتُ

   ✧ I said to the Prophet ﷺ: “Is it disliked to refuse a kindness?” He said: “How ugly that would be! If a trotter were gifted to me I would accept it, and if I were invited to it I would respond.”

   « أَجِبْ أَخَاكَ، فَإِنَّكَ مِنْهُ عَلَى خَيْرٍ ; إِمَّا حَقٌّ شَهِدْتَهُ، وَإِمَّا غَيْرُهُ فَتَنْهَاهُ عَنْهُ، وَتَأْمُرُهُ بِالْخَيْرِ

   ✧ “Respond to your brother, for you are in a good position with him: either it is a truth you witness, or otherwise you forbid him from it and enjoin good upon him.”

    أَنَّهُ أَتَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ: مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « لَا تَمْنَعُهُ نَفْسَهَا وَإِنْ كَانَتْ عَلَى ظَهْرِ قَتَبٍ، وَلَا تُعْطِي مِنْ بَيْتِهِ شَيْئًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ كَانَ لَهُ الْأَجْرُ وَعَلَيْهَا الْوِزْرُ. وَلَا تَصُومُ يَوْمًا تَطَوُّعًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ أَثِمَتْ وَلَمْ تُؤْجَرْ. وَلَا تَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ لَعَنَتْهَا الْمَلَائِكَةُ: مَلَائِكَةُ الْغَضَبِ، وَمَلَائِكَةُ الرَّحْمَةِ، حَتَّى تَتُوبَ أَوْ تَرْجِعَ ». قِيلَ: وَإِنْ كَانَ ظَالِمًا ؟ قَالَ: « وَإِنْ كَانَ ظَالِمًا

    ✧ A woman came to him and said: “What is the husband’s right over his wife?” He ﷺ said: “She should not deny him herself even if she is on the back of a camel saddle, and she should not give anything from his house except with his permission, and if she does that the reward is his and the sin is hers. She should not fast a voluntary day except with his permission, and if she does that she sins and is not rewarded. She should not go out of his house except with his permission, and if she does the angels curse her—the angels of wrath and the angels of mercy—until she repents or returns.” It was said: “Even if he is unjust?” He said: “Even if he is unjust.”

    إِنَّ امْرَأَةً مِنْ خَثْعَمَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ أَيِّمٌ، فَأَخْبِرْنِي مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « إِنَّ حَقَّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ إِنْ سَأَلَهَا نَفْسَهَا وَهِيَ عَلَى ظَهْرِ بَعِيرٍ أَنْ لَا تَمْنَعَهُ، وَمِنْ حَقِّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ أَنْ لَا تَصُومَ يَوْمًا تَطَوُّعًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ جَاعَتْ وَعَطِشَتْ، وَلَمْ يُقْبَلْ مِنْهَا. وَمِنْ حَقِّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ أَنْ لَا تُعْطِيَ شَيْئًا مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ كَانَ الْأَجْرُ لِغَيْرِهَا وَالشَّقَاءُ عَلَيْهَا. وَمِنْ حَقِّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى الزَّوْجَةِ أَنْ لَا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ لَعَنَتْهَا مَلَائِكَةُ السَّمَاءِ، وَمَلَائِكَةُ الرَّحْمَةِ، وَمَلَائِكَةُ الْعَذَابِ، حَتَّى تَرْجِعَ أَوْ تَتُوبَ

    ✧ A woman from Khathʿam came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, I am a previously married woman. Tell me, what right does a husband have over his wife?" He ﷺ said: "Indeed, a husband's right over his wife is that if he asks her for herself while she is on the back of a camel, she should not refuse him. Among the husband's rights over his wife is that she should not fast a voluntary day except with his permission; if she does, she becomes hungry and thirsty, and it is not accepted from her. Among the husband's rights over his wife is that she should not give anything from his house except with his permission; if she does, the reward is for someone else and the hardship is upon her. Among the husband's rights over his wife is that she should not leave her house except with his permission; if she does, the angels of heaven, the angels of mercy, and the angels of punishment curse her until she returns or repents."

    لَمَّا قَدِمَ مُعَاذٌ ؓ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ قَوْمًا يَسْجُدُ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ، أَفَلَا نَسْجُدُ لَكَ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « لَوْ أَمَرْتُ شَيْئًا يَسْجُدُ لِشَيْءٍ لَأَمَرْتُ النِّسَاءَ يَسْجُدْنَ لِأَزْوَاجِهِنَّ

    ✧ When Muʿādh ؓ came from Yemen, he said: "O Messenger of God ﷺ, I saw people prostrating to one another. Should we not prostrate to you?" He ﷺ said: "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would command women to prostrate to their husbands."

    إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ، فَقَالَ: « السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُنَّ يَا كَوَافِرَ الْمُنْعِمِينَ ! » قَالَ: فَقُلْنَ: نَعُوذُ بِاللهِ أَنْ نَكْفُرَ نِعْمَةَ اللهِ ! قَالَ ﷺ: « تَقُولُ إِحْدَاكُنَّ إِذَا غَضِبَتْ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا: مَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْكَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ.

    ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by some women and said: "Peace be upon you, O ungrateful deniers of kindness!" They said: "We seek refuge in God from denying God's blessings!" He ﷺ said: "One of you says when she is angry with her husband: 'I have never seen any good from you.'"

    إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى بِابْنَةٍ لَهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذِهِ ابْنَتِي، وَأَبَتْ أَنْ تَتَزَوَّجَ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « أَطِيعِي أَبَاكِ ». كُلُّ ذَلِكَ تَرَدُّ عَلَيْهِ مَقَالَتَهُ، فَقَالَتْ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ، لَا أَتَزَوَّجُ حَتَّى تُخْبِرَنِي: مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « لَوْ كَانَ بِهِ قَرْحٌ، أَوِ ابْتَدَرَ مَنْخِرَاهُ دَمًا وَصَدِيدًا، ثُمَّ لَحَسْتِيهِ بِلِسَانِكِ - مَا أَدَّيْتِ حَقَّهُ ». فَقَالَتْ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَتَزَوَّجُ أَبَدًا، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « لَا تُنْكِحُونَهُنَّ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِنَّ

    ✧ A man brought his daughter to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, this is my daughter, and she refuses to marry." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to her: "Obey your father." She kept rejecting his words. She said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not marry until you tell me: what is the husband's right over his wife?" He ﷺ said: "If he had a wound, or his nostrils gushed blood and pus, and you licked it with your tongue, you would not have fulfilled his right." She said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never marry." He ﷺ said: "Do not marry them off except with their permission."

    إِنَّ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ تَحْتَ رَجُلٍ، فَمَرِضَ أَبُوهَا، فَأَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أَبِي مَرِيضٌ، وَزَوْجِي يَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لِي أَنْ أُمَرِّضَهُ ! فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « أَطِيعِي زَوْجَكِ ». فَمَاتَ أَبُوهَا، فَاسْتَأْذَنَتْ زَوْجَهَا أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَأَبَى زَوْجُهَا أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَهَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَسَأَلَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهَا: « أَطِيعِي زَوْجَكِ ». فَأَطَاعَتْ زَوْجَهَا، وَلَمْ تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَبِيهَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « قَدْ غَفَرَ اللهُ لِأَبِيكِ بِطَوَاعِيَتِكِ زَوْجَكِ

    ✧ A woman was married to a man, and her father fell ill. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, my father is ill, and my husband refuses to allow me to nurse him!" The Prophet ﷺ said to her: "Obey your husband." Then her father died. She asked her husband's permission to pray over him, and her husband refused to allow her to pray. She asked the Prophet ﷺ, and he said to her: "Obey your husband." So she obeyed her husband and did not pray over her father. The Prophet ﷺ said: "God has forgiven your father because of your obedience to your husband."

    إِنَّ رَجُلًا غَزَا وَامْرَأَتُهُ فِي عُلْوٍ، وَأَبُوهَا فِي سُفْلٍ، وَأَمَرَهَا أَنْ لَا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا، فَاشْتَكَى أَبُوهَا

    ✧ A man went on a military expedition while his wife was upstairs and her father was downstairs. He ordered her not to leave her house, and her father fell ill.

    أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، قَالَتْ: إِنَّ زَوْجَ إِحْدَانَا يُرِيدُهَا فَتَمْنَعُهُ نَفْسَهَا ; إِمَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ غَضْبَى، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ غَيْرَ نَشِيطَةٍ لَهُ. فَهَلْ عَلَيْهَا فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ حَرَجٍ ؟ قَالَتْ: « نَعَمْ. إِنَّ حَقَّهُ عَلَيْكِ أَنْ لَوْ أَرَادَكِ وَأَنْتِ عَلَى قَتَبٍ لَمْ تَمْنَعِيهِ

    ✧ She asked ʿĀʾishah ؓ, the Mother of the Believers, saying: "One of our husbands desires her, and she withholds herself from him, either because she is angry or because she is not eager for him. Is there any sin upon her in that?" She said: "Yes. His right over you is that if he desired you while you were on a camel saddle, you should not refuse him."

    أَنَّ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَتَتْ أَبَاهَا تَشْكُو الزُّبَيْرَ، فَقَالَ لَهَا: « ارْجِعِي يَا بُنَيَّةُ، إِنْ صَبَرْتِ وَأَحْسَنْتِ صُحْبَتَهُ، ثُمَّ مَاتَ، فَلَمْ تَنْكِحِي بَعْدَهُ، وَدَخَلْتُمَا الْجَنَّةَ - كُنْتِ زَوْجَتَهُ

    ✧ Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr came to her father complaining about al-Zubayr. He said to her: "Return, my little daughter. If you are patient and treat him well, then he dies, and you do not marry after him, and you both enter Paradise, you will be his wife."

    « لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تَأْخُذُ مِنْ بَيْتِ زَوْجِهَا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ زَوْجِهَا، وَلَا يَحِلُّ لَهَا أَنْ تَأْخُذَهُ وَهُوَ كَارِهٌ، وَلَا تَخْرُجَ وَهُوَ كَارِهٌ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهِ، وَلَا تُطْمِعَ فِيهِ أَحَدًا مَا اصْطَحَبَا، وَلَا تُخَشِّنَ بِصَدْرِهِ، وَلَا تَعْتَزِلَ فِرَاشَهُ. وَلَا تُضَارَّ بِهِ وَإِنْ كَانَ هُوَ أَظْلَمَ مِنْهَا أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُ حَتَّى تُرْضِيَهُ ; فَإِنْ هُوَ قَبِلَ مِنْهَا فَبِهَا وَنِعْمَتْ، قَبِلَ اللهُ عُذْرَهَا، وَأَفْلَحَ حُجَّتَهَا، وَلَا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهَا. وَإِنْ أَبَى الزَّوْجُ أَنْ يَرْضَى فَقَدْ أَبْلَغَتْ إِلَيْهِ عُذْرَهَا. وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا، فَرَضِيَتْ بِالصِّرَامِ حَتَّى تَمْضِيَ لَهَا ثَلَاثُ لَيَالٍ. وَإِنْ أَذِنَتْ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهِ، أَوْ أَتَتْ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهِ فِي زِيَارَةِ وَالِدٍ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ مَا شَهِدَ عِنْدَهَا، فَأَحْنَثَتْ لَهُ قَسَمًا، وَأَطَاعَتْ فِيهِ وَالِدًا أَوْ وَلَدًا، أَوِ اعْتَزَلَتْ لَهُ مَضْجَعًا، أَوْ خَشَّنَتْ لَهُ صَدْرًا - فَإِنَّهُنَّ لَا يَزَالُ يُكْتَبُ عَلَيْهِنَّ ثَلَاثٌ مِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ مَا فَعَلْنَ ذَلِكَ: أَكْبَرُ الْكَبَائِرِ: الْإِشْرَاكُ بِاللهِ، وَقَتْلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ مُتَعَمِّدًا، وَالثَّالِثُ: أَكْلُ الرِّبَا. وَكَفَى بِالْمَرْأَةِ إِثْمًا أَنْ تَأْتِيَ كُلَّمَا غَضِبَ عَلَيْهَا زَوْجُهَا ثَلَاثًا مِنَ الْكَبَائِرِ، اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهَا الشَّيْطَانُ، فَأَصْبَحَتْ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ ». قَالَ: وَحَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ ؓ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: « لَا تَزَالُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ تَلْعَنُهَا، وَيَلْعَنُهَا اللهُ تَعَالَى، وَخُزَّانُ دَارِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَدَارِ الْعَذَابِ مِمَّا انْتَهَكَتْ مِنْ مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

    ✧ "It is not lawful for a woman to take from her husband's house except with her husband's permission. It is not lawful for her to take it while he is unwilling, nor to go out while he is unwilling without his permission, nor to make anyone covet him as long as they are together, nor to be harsh toward him, nor to keep away from his bed. She should not harm him, even if he is more unjust than her, until she comes to him and pleases him. If he accepts from her, then it is good and excellent; God accepts her excuse, and her argument prevails, and there is no sin upon her. If the husband refuses to be pleased, she has presented her excuse to him. If she does none of that, and she is content with separation until three nights pass for her. If she permits without his permission, or comes without his permission to visit a parent or someone else, and she breaks an oath for him, and obeys a parent or child in that, or keeps away from his bed, or is harsh toward him—then three major sins are written against them as long as they do that: the greatest of major sins: associating partners with God, killing a believer deliberately, and the third: consuming usury. It is a sufficient sin for a woman that every time her husband is angry with her, three major sins come, the devil takes control of her, and she becomes one of the people of the Fire." He said: "And Muʿādh ؓ narrated to us that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The angels continue to curse her, and God Almighty curses her, and the keepers of the abode of mercy and the abode of punishment curse her because of what she has violated of disobedience to God, Mighty and Majestic.'"

    ✧ We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among a group of women from the Ansar, and he took from us: 'That you will not deceive your husbands.' She said: When we left, we said: 'Did we ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what deceiving our husbands means?' So we returned to him and she asked him, and he said: 'That you betray him and gift his wealth to other than him.'

    ✧ O people, indeed women are captives with you. You have taken them by Allah's trust, and made their private parts lawful by Allah's word. You have rights over them, and they have rights over you. Among your rights is that they not allow anyone you dislike to tread on your beds, and that they not disobey you in what is good. If they do that, then they are entitled to their provision and clothing with kindness. And if you strike them, strike with a blow that is not severe..."

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade striking women, so they complained. Then he permitted them to strike them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Last night, seventy women went around the family of Muhammad, all of whom had been struck.' And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I do not like to see a man with his vein throbbing, the muscles of his neck bulging over his wife, killing her.'

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ stood among the people, praised Allah Almighty, extolled Him, then said: 'Indeed Allah Almighty enjoins you to treat women well! Indeed Allah enjoins you to treat women well! Indeed Allah enjoins you to treat women well! Indeed Allah enjoins you concerning your mothers, your fathers, your brothers, your paternal aunts, and your maternal aunts. Indeed a man from the People of the Two Books marries a woman and does not know what good he has in her, and neither of them desires to part from the other until they die of old age.'

    إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَادِيَةِ تَزَوَّجَ ابْنَةَ عَمٍّ لَهُ، فَوَلَدَتْ لَهُ جَارِيَةً، فَمَاتَ عَنْهَا، فَخَلَفَ عَلَيْهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ. فَقَالَ أَوْلِيَاؤُهَا: لَا نَدَعُ ابْنَتَنَا تَكُونُ عِنْدَهُمْ. فَاخْتَصَمُوا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَتِ الْأُمُّ: أَنَا الْحَامِلُ الْحَاضِنُ وَالْمُرْضِعُ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « مَنْ تَخْتَارِينَ ؟ » فَقَالَتْ: أَخْتَارُ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَدَارَ الْإِيمَانِ، وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارَ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « لَا تَذْهَبُوا بِهَا مَا دَامَتْ عَيْنِي تَكْلَؤُهَا، وَلَأَنْ بَقِيتُ لَأَضَعَنَّهَا مَوْضِعًا يُقِرُّ عَيْنَهَا ». قَالَ: فَاخْتَصَمُوا إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ، فَقَالَ لَهَا: مَنْ تَخْتَارِينَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ مِثْلَ الْقَوْلِ الْأَوَّلِ، فَقَضَى بِهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ لِلْأَوْلِيَاءِ، فَقَامَ بِلَالٌ ؓ فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ... فَقَضَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ بِمَا قَضَى بِهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

    ✧ A man from the desert married his cousin, and she bore him a girl, then he died leaving her. A man from the Ansar married her (the widow). Her guardians said: We will not leave our daughter with them. They brought the dispute to the Prophet ﷺ. The mother said: I am the one who carried her, the one who is entitled to custody, and the one who breastfeeds. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to her: "Whom do you choose?" She said: I choose God and His Messenger and the abode of faith, and the Muhajirun and the Ansar. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Do not take her away as long as my eye watches over her, and if I remain, I will place her in a position that will delight her eye." He said: Then they brought the dispute to Abu Bakr ؓ, and he said to her: "Whom do you choose?" She said the same as the first statement. Abu Bakr ؓ ruled in favor of the guardians. Bilal ؓ stood up and said: "O Abu Bakr..." Then Abu Bakr ؓ ruled as the Messenger of God ﷺ had ruled.

    خَرَجَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ ؓ إِلَى مَكَّةَ، فَقَدِمَتِ ابْنَةُ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ؓ. فَقَالَ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ: أَنَا آخُذُهَا وَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا، ابْنَةُ عَمِّي وَعِنْدِي خَالَتُهَا، وَإِنَّمَا الْخَالَةُ أُمٌّ، وَهِيَ أَحَقُّ. وَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: بَلْ أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا، هِيَ ابْنَةُ عَمِّي، وَعِنْدِي ابْنَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَهِيَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا. وَإِنِّي لَأَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي لِيَسْمَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حُجَّتِي قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ. وَقَالَ زَيْدٌ ؓ: بَلْ أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا، خَرَجْتُ إِلَيْهَا وَسَافَرْتُ، وَجِئْتُ بِهَا. فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: « مَا شَأْنُكُمْ ؟ » فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: ابْنَةُ عَمِّي، وَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا، وَعِنْدِي ابْنَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، تَكُونُ مَعَهَا أَحَقَّ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِهَا. وَقَالَ جَعْفَرٌ ؓ: أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ابْنَةُ عَمِّي، وَعِنْدِي خَالَتُهَا وَالْخَالَةُ أُمٌّ، وَهِيَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِهَا. وَقَالَ زَيْدٌ ؓ: بَلْ أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا، خَرَجْتُ إِلَيْهَا، وَتَجَشَّمْتُ السَّفَرَ وَأَنْفَقْتُ، فَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِهَا. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « سَأَقْضِي بَيْنَكُمَا فِي هَذَا وَفِي غَيْرِهِ ». قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: فَلَمَّا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « وَفِي غَيْرِهِ » - قُلْتُ: نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ فِي رَفْعِنَا أَصْوَاتَنَا. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا زَيْدُ فَمَوْلَايَ وَمَوْلَاهُمَا ». قَالَ ؓ: قَدْ رَضِيتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ ﷺ: « وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا جَعْفَرُ، فَأَشْبَهْتَ خَلْقِي وَخُلُقِي، وَأَنْتَ مِنْ شَجَرَتِي الَّتِي خُلِقْتُ مِنْهَا ». قَالَ ؓ: رَضِيتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ ﷺ: « وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا عَلِيُّ فَصَفِيِّي وَأَمِينِي ». قَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْهَادِ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ حَسَنٍ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ ﷺ قَالَ: « أَنْتَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْكَ ». قَالَ ؓ: رَضِيتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ ﷺ: « وَأَمَّا الْجَارِيَةُ فَقَدْ قَضَيْتُ بِهَا لِجَعْفَرٍ، تَكُونُ مَعَ خَالَتِهَا، وَالْخَالَةُ أُمٌّ ». قَالُوا: سَلَّمْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ

    ✧ Zayd b. Haritha ؓ went out to Makkah, and the daughter of Hamza b. Abd al-Muttalib ؓ arrived. Ja'far b. Abi Talib ؓ said: I will take her and I have more right to her; she is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is with me, and the maternal aunt is like a mother and has more right. Ali ؓ said: Rather I have more right to her; she is my cousin, and with me is the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and she has more right to her. And I raise my voice so that the Messenger of God ﷺ may hear my argument before he comes out. Zayd ؓ said: Rather I have more right to her; I went to her, traveled, and brought her. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out and said: "What is the matter with you?" Ali ؓ said: She is my cousin, and I have more right to her, and with me is the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ; she will be with her, and she has more right to her than anyone else. Ja'far ؓ said: I have more right to her, O Messenger of God; she is my cousin, and her maternal aunt is with me, and the maternal aunt is like a mother, and she has more right to her than anyone else. Zayd ؓ said: Rather I have more right to her; I went to her, undertook the journey and spent, so I have more right to her. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I will judge between you in this and in other matters." Ali ؓ said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ said "and in other matters," I said: The Qur'an was revealed regarding our raising our voices. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "As for you, O Zayd, you are my mawla and their mawla." He ؓ said: I am content, O Messenger of God. He ﷺ said: "As for you, O Ja'far, you resemble my creation and my character, and you are from my tree from which I was created." He ؓ said: I am content, O Messenger of God.     ✧ I came to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i and said: A man disputed with me - he was called Sa'id -... and he mentioned the hadith. He said: Then Ibrahim said: That came to me once, and he claimed that he said to his wife: Every wife of his is divorced three times except you. I said: Shurayh used to say: If he begins with divorce, it takes effect on her. It reached me that when he went out, he said: Is this anything but the opinion of men? Then it reached me that he became wary regarding her and left her. Jarir said: I met Sa'id al-Zubaydi and asked him about this. He said: Indeed I asked Sa'id b.     إِنَّ رَجُلًا خَطَبَ امْرَأَةً، فَقَالُوا: لَا نُزَوِّجُكَ حَتَّى تُطَلِّقَ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ: اشْهَدُوا أَنِّي قَدْ طَلَّقْتُ ثَلَاثًا. فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ ادَّعَوُا الطَّلَاقَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: كَيْفَ قُلْتُ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: لَا نُزَوِّجُكَ حَتَّى تُطَلِّقَ ثَلَاثًا، فَطَلَّقْتَ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ: أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي تَزَوَّجْتُ فُلَانَةَ بِنْتَ فُلَانٍ فَطَلَّقْتُهَا، وَفُلَانَةُ كَانَتْ تَحْتِي فَطَلَّقْتُهَا، حَتَّى عَدَّ ثَلَاثًا. قَالُوا: مَا هَذَا أَرَدْنَا. فَوَرَدَ شَقِيقُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ ؓ، فَأَمَرُوهُ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ سَأَلَهُ، وَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عُثْمَانَ ؓ فَقَالَ: « لَهُ نِيَّتُهُ ».

    ✧ A man proposed to a woman, and they said: 'We will not marry you until you divorce three times.' He said: 'Bear witness that I have divorced three times.' When he consummated the marriage with the woman, they claimed the divorce. He said to them: 'How did I say it?' He said: 'We said, "We will not marry you until you divorce three times," and you divorced three times.' He said: 'Do you not know that I married so-and-so daughter of so-and-so and divorced her, and so-and-so was under me and I divorced her,' until he counted three. They said: 'That is not what we meant.' So Shaqiq b. Thawr went to 'Uthman ؓ, and they instructed him to ask 'Uthman about that. When he arrived, he asked him, and he reported that he asked 'Uthman ؓ, and he said: 'He has his intention.'

    ✧ We were with Ibn Mas'ud ؓ, and a man came to him and said: 'A man said to his wife, "She is divorced eight times."' He said: 'Did you say it in one go?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you want your wife to be separated from you?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'It is as you said.' Then another came and said: 'A man said to his wife, "Tonight she is divorced as many times as the stars."' He said: 'Did you say it in one go?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you want your wife to be separated from you?' He said: 'Yes.' Ibn Mas'ud ؓ then mentioned the women of the people of the earth with something I do not remember, then he said: 'Allah has made clear to you how divorce is. Whoever divorces as Allah Almighty commanded him, it will be made clear to him, and whoever is confused about it, we will make his confusion apply to him. By Allah, you will not confuse yourselves and we will bear it. It is as you say.'

She is irrevocably separated from him by three [divorces]. And the rest of them are an act of aggression; he took the signs of Allah in mockery."

    ادَّعَى نَصْرُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ رَبَاحٍ مَوْلَى خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ، فَقَامَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ فَقَالَ: مَوْلَايَ، وُلِدَ عَلَى فِرَاشٍ أَبِي. فَقَالَ نَصْرٌ: أَخِي، هُوَ وَبَنَاتِي بِمَنْزِلَةٍ. قَالَ: فَطَالَتْ خُصُومَتُهُمْ، فَدَخَلُوا عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ وَفِهْرٌ تَحْتَ رَأْسِهِ، فَادَّعَيَا. فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ؓ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « الْوَلَدُ لِلْفِرَاشِ، وَلِلْعَاهِرِ الْحَجَرُ ». قَالَ نَصْرٌ: فَأَيْنَ قَضَاؤُكَ هَذَا يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ فِي زِيَادٍ ؟ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: قَضَاءُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرٌ مِنْ قَضَاءِ مُعَاوِيَةَ. قَالَ: فَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَبَاحٍ لَا يُجِيبُ نَصْرًا إِلَى مَا ادَّعَاهُ، فَقَالَ نَصْرٌ: أَبَا خَالِدٍ مَا مِثْلُ مَالٍ وَرِثْتَهُ وَخُذْنِي أَخًا عِنْدَ الْفِرَاشِ شَاهِدَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ مَالِي ثَرِيٌّ وَمَنْصِبٌ شَيْءٌ وَأَعْرَاقٌ تَهُزُّكَ صَاعِدَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ لَا تَجْعَلَنَّ بَنَاتِنَا إِمَاءً لِمَخْزُومٍ وَكُنْ مُتَوَاجِدَا أَبَا خَالِدٍ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَخْشَى ابْنَ خَالِدٍ فَلَمْ يَكُنِ الْحَجَّاجُ يَرْهَبُ خَالِدًا أَبَا خَالِدٍ لَا نَحْنُ نَارٌ وَلَا هُمْ جِنَانٌ رَعَتْ فِيهَا الْعُيُونُ رَوَاكِدَا.

    ✧ Nasr b. al-Hajjaj claimed 'Abd Allah b. Rabah, the freedman of Khalid b. al-Walid. Then 'Abd al-Rahman b. Khalid b. al-Walid stood up and said: 'My freedman; he was born on my father's bed.' Nasr said: 'My brother; he and my daughters are in the same position.' He said: Their dispute grew long, so they entered upon Mu'awiyah while Fihr was under his head, and they both claimed him. Mu'awiyah ؓ said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The child belongs to the bed, and the fornicator gets the stone."' Nasr said: 'Where is this judgment of yours, O Mu'awiyah, regarding Ziyad?' Mu'awiyah said: 'The judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better than the judgment of Mu'awiyah.' He said: 'Abd Allah b. Rabah would not respond to Nasr's claim. So Nasr said: 'O Abu Khalid, there is no wealth like one you inherit, so take me as a brother at the bed as a witness. O Abu Khalid, my wealth is abundant and my standing is something, and my roots will make you rise ever higher. O Abu Khalid, do not make our daughters slaves to Makhzum, and be generous. O Abu Khalid, if you fear Ibn Khalid, al-Hajjaj did not fear Khalid. O Abu Khalid, we are not fire nor are they gardens where eyes graze, calm.'

     ✧ Umm Kulthum bt. 'Uqbah was married to al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam. He went out for prayer while she was in labor. She concealed it from him, and said to him: "Put my heart at ease with a divorce." So he divorced her. When he returned, she had already given birth. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him, and he said: "The term has reached its appointed time. Propose to her." He said: "She deceived me, may Allah Almighty deceive her."

     قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: « سَلُونِي فَإِنَّكُمْ لَا تَسْأَلُونَ مِثْلِي، وَلَنْ تَسْأَلُوا مِثْلِي ». فَقَالَ ابْنُ الْكَوَّاءِ: أَخْبِرْنَا عَنِ الْأُخْتَيْنِ الْمَمْلُوكَتَيْنِ، وَعَنِ ابْنَةِ الْأَخِ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ: سَلْ عَمَّا يَعْنِيكَ، فَإِنَّكَ ذَاهِبٌ فِي التِّيهِ. فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا أَسْأَلُكَ عَمَّا لَا نَعْلَمُهُ، فَأَمَّا مَا نَعْلَمُ فَإِنَّا لَا نَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ. قَالَ: « أَمَّا الْأُخْتَانِ الْمَمْلُوكَتَانِ فَأَحَلَّتْهُمَا آيَةٌ، وَحَرَّمَتْهُمَا آيَةٌ، وَلَا آمُرُ بِهِ، وَلَا أَنْهَى عَنْهُ، وَلَا أَفْعَلُهُ أَنَا وَلَا أَهْلُ بَيْتِي ».

     ✧ 'Ali ؓ said: "Ask me, for you will not ask someone like me, and you will never ask someone like me." Ibn al-Kawwa' said: "Tell us about two sisters who are owned as slaves, and about the daughter of a brother through breastfeeding." He said: "Ask about what concerns you, for you are wandering in confusion." He said: "I only ask you about what we do not know. As for what we know, we do not ask about it." He said: "As for two sisters owned as slaves, one verse permitted them and another verse forbade them. I do not command it, nor do I forbid it, nor do I or my household do it."

     ✧ 'Uthman ؓ was asked about two sisters who are slave-girls, owned by right hand possession. He said: "One verse permitted them and another verse forbade them. I would not like to do it." This reached a man among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "If I were in charge of any affairs of the Muslims and this was brought to me, I would make it an exemplary punishment."

     ✧ Mu'adh b. 'Ubayd Allah b. Ma'mar asked 'A'ishah ؓ, saying: "I have a slave-girl whom I have had relations with, and she has a daughter who has reached puberty. May I have relations with her?" She forbade him from that. He said: "No, unless you say it is forbidden." She said: "No one from my family does that, nor anyone who obeys me."

     حَضَرْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَجَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: إِنْ وَجَدْتُ عَلَى بَطْنِ امْرَأَتِي رَجُلًا أَضْرِبُهُ بِالسَّيْفِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « أَيُّ بَيِّنَةٍ أَبْيَنُ مِنَ السَّيْفِ ؟ » ثُمَّ رَجَعَ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ فَقَالَ: « كِتَابُ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَشَاهِدٌ ». فَقَالَ سَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ؓ: أَيُّ بَيِّنَةٍ أَبْيَنُ مِنَ السَّيْفِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « كِتَابُ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَشَاهِدٌ ». فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ، هَذَا سَعْدٌ قَدِ اسْتَفَزَّتْهُ الْغَيْرَةُ حَتَّى خَالَفَ كِتَابَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ! فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ: إِنَّ سَعْدًا غَيُورٌ، مَا تَزَوَّجَ ثَيِّبًا قَطُّ، وَلَا قَدَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً طَلَّقَهَا. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِنَّ سَعْدًا غَيُورٌ، وَأَنَا غَيُورٌ، وَاللهُ أَغْيَرُ مِنِّي ». فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ: عَلَى مَا يَغَارُ اللهُ تَعَالَى ؟ فَقَالَ: « عَلَى رَجُلٍ مُجَاهِدٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَعَالَى يُخَالَفُ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ »

     ✧ I attended the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came to him and said: "If I find a man on the belly of my wife, should I strike him with the sword?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What evidence is clearer than the sword?" Then he recanted and said: "The Book of Allah Almighty and a witness." Sa'd b. 'Ubadah ؓ said: "What evidence is clearer than the sword?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The Book of Allah Almighty and a witness." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O assembly of the Ansar, this Sa'd has been provoked by jealousy until he contradicted the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic!" A man from the Ansar said: "Sa'd is jealous; he never married a previously married woman, and none of us could marry a woman he had divorced." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Sa'd is jealous, and I am more jealous than him, and Allah is more jealous than me." A man from the Ansar said: "Over what does Allah Almighty become jealous?" He said: "Over a man who strives in the path of Allah Almighty while his family is violated."

     إِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِ كُلَّ غَدَاةٍ، فَيُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِنَّ. فَكَانَتْ مِنْهُمُ امْرَأَةٌ عِنْدَهَا عَسَلٌ، فَكَانَ ﷺ إِذَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا أَحْضَرَتْ لَهُ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، فَيَمْكُثُ عِنْدَهَا. وَإِنَّ عَائِشَةَ وَحَفْصَةَ ؓ وَجَدَتَا مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِمَا ﷺ، قَالَتَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّا نَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ مَغَافِيرَ ! قَالَ: فَتَرَكَ ﷺ ذَلِكَ الْعَسَلَ

     ✧ The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to enter upon his wives every morning and greet them. Among them was a woman who had honey. Whenever he ﷺ entered upon her, she would bring him some of it, and he would stay with her. 'A'ishah and Hafsah ؓ noticed that. When he ﷺ entered upon them, they said: "O Messenger of Allah, we smell the scent of maghafir from you!" He said: "So he ﷺ abandoned that honey."

     ✧ A woman from Banu Bayadah sent to the Prophet ﷺ a wasq of barley, or he said: half a wasq of barley - Ayyub was uncertain. The Prophet ﷺ gave it to the one who had made zihar from his wife, and said: 'Give this as charity, for a sa' of barley suffices in place of half a sa' of wheat.'

He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and he said: 'Has Allah the Exalted not said: before they touch each other?' He said: 'I saw her and she pleased me!' He said: 'Refrain until you offer expiation.'

     خَرَجَ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ إِلَى السُّوقِ، فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ يُسَاوِمُ بِمِرْطٍ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا يَا عَمْرُو ؟ قَالَ: أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ ! فَقَالَ ؓ: أَنْتَ إِذًا أَنْتَ. فَنَقَدَ عُمَرُ، فَابْتَاعَهُ عَمْرٌو ؓ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى زَوْجَتِهِ، فَقَالَ: تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَلَيْكِ. ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَى السُّوقِ، فَجَلَسَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ. فَلَقِيَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فَقَالَ: مَا فَعَلَ الْمِرْطُ ؟ فَأَخْبَرَهُ، وَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « مَا أَعْطَيْتُمُوهُنَّ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ ». فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: لَا تَكْذِبْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ! قَالَ: فَنَادَى مِنَ الْبَابِ: يَا أُمَّتَاهُ، فَقَالَتْ: إِلَيْكَ يَا عَمْرُو، مَا لَكَ ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ يَقُولُ: لَا تَكْذِبْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ! قَالَ: فَأَنْشُدُكِ اللهَ، هَلْ سَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « مَا أَعْطَيْتُمُوهُنَّ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ » ؟ فَقَالَتِ: اللَّهُمَّ، نَعَمْ

     ✧ 'Amr b. Umayyah went out to the market, and while he was bargaining over a cloak, 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ appeared before him and said: What is this, O 'Amr? He said: I want to buy it and then give it as charity. He ؓ said: You then, you. So 'Umar paid, and 'Amr ؓ bought it. Then he entered upon his wife and said: I have given it to you as charity. Then he went out to the market and sat in his sitting place. 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ met him and said: What happened with the cloak? He informed him, and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whatever you give them of anything is charity for you." So 'Umar ؓ said: Do not lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He said: Then he called from the door: O mother! She said: Come in, O 'Amr, what is the matter with you? He said: 'Umar ؓ says: Do not lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! He said: I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whatever you give them of anything is charity for you"? She said: O Allah, yes.

     أُتِيَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ، أَوْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ؓ بِمِرْطٍ، فَاسْتَغْلَاهُ، فَمُرَّ بِهِ إِلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، فَاشْتَرَاهُ فَكَسَاهُ امْرَأَتَهُ سُخَيْلَةَ بِنْتَ عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ. فَمَرَّ بِهِ عُثْمَانُ أَوْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ؓ، فَقَالَ: مَا فَعَلَ الْمِرْطُ ؟ قَالَ عَمْرٌو ؓ: تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَلَى سُخَيْلَةَ بِنْتِ عُبَيْدَةَ. فَقَالَ: « إِنَّ كُلَّ مَا صَنَعْتَ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ صَدَقَةٌ » ؟ فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ ذَاكَ، فَذُكِرَ مَا قَالَ عَمْرٌو ؓ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: « صَدَقَ عَمْرٌو، كُلُّ مَا صَنَعْتَهُ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ صَدَقَةٌ ».

     ✧ 'Uthman b. 'Affan, or 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf ؓ, was brought a cloak, and he considered it expensive. It was taken to 'Amr b. Umayyah, who bought it and clothed his wife Sukhaylah bt. 'Ubaydah b. al-Harith with it. Then 'Uthman or 'Abd al-Rahman ؓ passed by him and said: What happened with the cloak? 'Amr ؓ said: I gave it as charity to Sukhaylah bt. 'Ubaydah. He said: "Indeed, everything you do for your family is charity." So 'Amr said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that. So what 'Amr ؓ said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was mentioned, and he said: " 'Amr has spoken the truth. Everything you do for your family is charity."

     بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً، فَاسْتَأْذَنَهُ شَابٌّ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ فِيهَا فَقَالَ: « هَلْ تَرَكْتَ فِي أَهْلِكَ مِنْ كَامِلٍ ؟ » قَالَ: لَا أَعْلَمُهُ، وَهُمْ صِبْيَانٌ صِغَارٌ. قَالَ: « ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَإِنَّ فِيهِمْ مُجَاهَدًا حَسَنًا ».

     ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition, and a young man asked his permission to go out with it. He said: "Have you left behind anyone in your family who is complete?" He said: "I do not know, and they are young children." He said: "Return to them, for in them there is a good struggle."

     « مَا أَنْفَقَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ، وَوَلَدِهِ، وَمَالِهِ - كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ. وَمَا وَقَى بِهِ الْمَرْءُ عِرْضَهُ كُتِبَ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ ». قَالَ: « وَكُلُّ نَفَقَةِ مُؤْمِنٍ فِي غَيْرِ مَعْصِيَةٍ فَعَلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى خَلَفُهَا ضَامِنًا إِلَّا نَفَقَةً فِي بُنْيَانٍ ». فَقُلْنَا لِجَابِرٍ ؓ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ، مَا أَرَادَ بِقَوْلِهِ: « مَا وَقَى بِهِ الْمَرْءُ عِرْضَهُ » ؟ قَالَ: يُعْطِي الشَّاعِرَ وَذَا اللِّسَانِ. قَالَ: كَأَنَّهُ يَقُولُ: الَّذِي يُتَّقَى لِسَانُهُ.

     ✧ "Whatever a man spends on his family, his children, and his wealth, it is recorded for him as charity. And whatever a person uses to protect his honor is recorded for him as charity." He said: "And every expenditure of a believer in other than disobedience is guaranteed by Allah, the Exalted, to be replaced, except an expenditure on building." So we said to Jabir ؓ: O Abu 'Abd Allah, what did he mean by his saying: "whatever a person uses to protect his honor"? He said: He gives to the poet and the one with a tongue. He said: It is as if he is saying: the one whose tongue is feared.

     ✧ Indeed, for a woman during her pregnancy until her delivery, until her weaning, there is reward like the one who wallows in the path of Allah. If she perishes during that, she has the reward of a martyr.

     « مِنْ تِسْعٍ وَتِسْعِينَ امْرَأَةً وَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَبَقِيَّتُهُنَّ فِي النَّارِ ». فَاشْتَدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى مَنْ حَضَرَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمَةَ إِذَا حَمَلَتْ فَإِنَّ لَهَا أَجْرَ الصَّائِمِ الْقَائِمِ الْمُحْرِمِ الْمُجَاهِدِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَعَالَى. فَإِذَا وَضَعَتْ فَإِنَّ لَهَا فِي أَوَّلِ رَضْعَةٍ أَجْرَ حَيَاةِ نَسَمَةٍ

     ✧ "Out of ninety-nine women, one is in Paradise, and the rest are in the Fire." This weighed heavily on those present from the Emigrants, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, when a Muslim woman becomes pregnant, she has the reward of one who fasts, stands in prayer, is in a state of ihram, and strives in the path of Allah, the Exalted. When she gives birth, then for her in the first breastfeeding is the reward of giving life to a soul."

     ✧ I said: O Messenger of Allah, I vowed to slaughter a number of camels at an idol from the idols of the pre-Islamic era? He ﷺ said: "Fulfill your vow, and do not disobey your Lord." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no fulfillment of a vow in disobedience to Allah, the Exalted, nor in severing ties of kinship, nor in what one does not own."

     أَفَاءَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِبِلًا، فَعَرَضَهَا، فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ ؓ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، احْذُنِي ! قَالَ ﷺ: « لَا ». فَقَالَ لَهُ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « وَاللهِ لَا أَفْعَلُ »، إِلَى أَنْ بَقِيَ أَرْبَعٌ عُزْرُ الذُّرَى، فَقَالَ: « خُذْهُنَّ يَا أَبَا مُوسَى ». قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي اسْتَحْذَيْتُكَ فَمَنَعْتَنِي، وَحَلَفْتَ فَأَشْفَقْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ دَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهْمٌ. قَالَ ﷺ: « إِنِّي إِذَا حَلَفْتُ، فَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُ - كَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي، وَأَتَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ أَفْضَلُ ».

     ✧ Allah granted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ some camels as spoils, and he displayed them. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari ؓ said, 'O Messenger of Allah, give me some!' He ﷺ said, 'No.' He asked him three times, then the Prophet ﷺ said, 'By Allah, I will not do it,' until there remained four with prominent humps. He said, 'Take them, O Abu Musa.' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I asked you and you refused me, and you swore, so I feared that some doubt might have occurred to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He ﷺ said, 'When I swear an oath and then see that something else is better, I expiate for my oath and do that which is better.'

     جِئْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَفَرٍ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ، فَقَالَ: « مَا عِنْدِي مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ، وَاللهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ ». قَالَ: فَتَرَكَنَا أَيَّامًا، فَأُتِيَ بِإِبِلٍ مِنْ إِبِلِ الصَّدَقَةِ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ، فَأَمَرَ لَنَا بِثَلَاثِ جِمَالٍ غُرِّ الذُّرَى، فَانْصَرَفْنَا بِهَا، فَقُلْتُ لِأَصْحَابِي: وَاللهِ مَا أَظُنُّ يُبَارَكُ لَنَا فِيهَا ! إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يَحْمِلَنَا فَلَعَلَّهُ نَسِيَ، فَارْجِعُوا بِنَا إِلَيْهِ نُذَكِّرْهُ بِيَمِينِهِ. فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، يَمِينُكَ الَّتِي حَلَفْتَ عَلَيْهَا أَنْ لَا تَحْمِلَنَا ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « قَدْ عَرَفْتُ يَمِينِي، مَنْ حَلَفَ مِنْكُمْ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا، فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ، وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ».

     ✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of people asking him for mounts. He said, 'I have nothing to mount you on, and by Allah, I will not mount you.' So he left us for some days, then some camels from the zakah camels were brought to him. He sent for me and ordered for us three camels with white humps. We departed with them, and I said to my companions, 'By Allah, I think there will be no blessing for us in them, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ swore that he would not mount us, so perhaps he forgot. Let us return to him and remind him of his oath.' So we returned to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, your oath that you swore not to mount us?' He ﷺ said, 'I know my oath. Whoever among you swears an oath and then sees something better, let him do that which is better and expiate for his oath.'

     « كُنَّا نَعُدُّ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِي لَا كَفَّارَةَ لَهُ الْيَمِينَ الْغَمُوسَ ». قَالَ: قِيلَ: وَمَا هِيَ ؟ قَالَ: اقْتِطَاعُ مَالِ الرَّجُلِ بِيَمِينِهِ

     ✧ We used to count among the sins for which there is no expiation the false oath (al-yamin al-ghamus). He said: It was asked, 'What is it?' He said: 'Seizing a man's property by his oath.'

     إِنَّ رَجُلًا نَذَرَ أَنْ يَنْحَرَ ذَوْدًا بِبُوَانَةَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: « أَحَلَفْتَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، وَقُلْتَ ذَلِكَ وَفِي نَفْسِكَ شَيْءٌ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ؟ » قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ ﷺ: « فَانْحَرْهَا ».

     ✧ A man vowed to slaughter some camels at Buwana. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Did you swear an oath to that, and did you say that while there was in your soul something of the affairs of the pre-Islamic ignorance?” He said: No. He ﷺ said: “Then slaughter them.”

     إِنَّ أُخْتَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ نَذَرَتْ أَنْ تَحُجَّ مَاشِيَةً نَاشِرَةً شَعَرَهَا، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « مُرْهَا، فَلْتَخْتَمِرْ وَلْتَرْكَبْ، وَلْتَصُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ».

     ✧ The sister of 'Uqbah b. 'Amir vowed to perform Hajj walking with her hair uncovered. He asked the Prophet ﷺ about that, and he ﷺ said: “Order her to veil herself, to ride, and to fast three days.”

     أَنَّ عَمَّتَهُ الْفُرَيْعَةَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا نَذْرٌ لَمْ تَقْضِهِ، أَيُجْزِئُ إِنْ قَضَيْتُ عَنْهَا ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « أَرَأَيْتِ لَوْ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّكِ دَيْنٌ، فَقَضَيْتِهِ - أَمَا كَانَ يُقْبَلُ مِنْكِ ؟ » قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ ﷺ: « فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ ! » قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أُمِّي تُوُفِّيَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَشْيٌ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ ﷺ: « هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعِينَ أَنْ تَمْشِيَ عَنْهَا ؟ »، قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ ﷺ: « فَامْشِي عَنْ أُمِّكِ ».

     ✧ His paternal aunt al-Furay'ah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died and she had a vow that she did not fulfill. Will it suffice if I fulfill it on her behalf? He ﷺ said: “Tell me, if your mother had a debt and you paid it – would it not be accepted from you?” She said: Yes. He ﷺ said: “Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is more deserving of that!” She said: O Messenger of Allah, my mother died and she had to walk to the Ka'bah? He ﷺ said: “Are you able to walk on her behalf?” She said: Yes. He ﷺ said: “Then walk on behalf of your mother.”

     إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ جَيْشًا، فَقَالَ: « إِنْ أَتَانِي مِنْهُمْ خَبَرٌ صَالِحٌ لَأَحْمَدَنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى حَقَّ حَمْدِهِ ». فَلَمَّا أَتَاهُ ﷺ مِنْهُمْ خَبَرٌ صَالِحٌ قَالَ: « اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ شُكْرًا، وَلَكَ الْمَنُّ فَضْلًا ». فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّكَ قُلْتَ: « إِنْ أَتَانِي مِنْهُمْ خَبَرٌ صَالِحٌ لَأَحْمَدَنَّ اللهَ حَقَّ حَمْدِهِ » ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: قُلْتُ: « اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ شُكْرًا، وَلَكَ الْمَنُّ فَضْلًا ».

     ✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent out an army and said: “If good news comes to me from them, I will surely praise Allah, the Exalted, with the praise He fully deserves.” When good news from them came to him ﷺ, he said: “O Allah, to You belongs praise as gratitude, and to You belongs favor as grace.” 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ said to him: O Messenger of Allah, you said: “If good news comes to me from them, I will surely praise Allah with the praise He fully deserves”? He ﷺ said: I said: “O Allah, to You belongs praise as gratitude, and to You belongs favor as grace.”
