✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: “Which day is this?” We said: The day of sacrifice. He said: “Which month is this?” We said: Dhu al-Hijjah, a sacred month. He said: “Which land is this?” We said: A sacred land. He ﷺ said: “Indeed your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to you like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours! Let the one present convey to the one absent.”

✧ This surah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the middle of the days of Tashriq at Mina, while he was on the Farewell Hajj: “When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes…” until he finished it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ knew that it was the farewell, so he ordered his mount al-Qaswa' to be saddled, and it was saddled for him. He ﷺ stood for the people at al-'Aqabah, and the people gathered to him. He praised Allah, the Exalted, and extolled Him as He deserves, then said: O people, every blood that was shed in the pre-Islamic ignorance is now null and void, and the first blood I abolish is the blood of Iyas b. Rabi'ah b. al-Harith, who was being nursed among Banu Layth and was killed by Hudhayl. And the first usury I abolish is the usury of al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib ؓ. You shall have your capital sums, so you do not wrong and you are not wronged.

✧ I found on the blade of the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a writing: “Among the people most severe in transgression is one who strikes someone other than the one who struck him, a man who kills someone other than his killer, and a man who gives allegiance to someone other than the people who have shown him favor. Whoever does that has disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will accept from him neither ransom nor recompense. And in the other: The believers’ blood is equal in value and their wealth is equal in protection; the lowest of them may grant protection on their behalf; a Muslim is not to be killed for a disbeliever, nor one who has a covenant while his covenant remains; the people of two different religions do not inherit from one another; a woman is not to be married to her paternal aunt or her maternal aunt; there is no prayer after ‘Asr until the sun sets; and a woman is not to travel three nights without a mahram.”

They said: 'O Messenger of God, let us benefit from it as God, Mighty and Majestic, has said!' He ﷺ remained silent about them. Then this verse was revealed: 'Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated...' the verse. It was said: 'Has wine been forbidden?' They said: 'O Messenger of God, we do not drink it near prayer time,' and he ﷺ remained silent about them. Then it was revealed: 'O you who believe, indeed wine, gambling, sacrificing on stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Wine has been forbidden.' A skin of wine from Syria – or skins – was brought to a man, so the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar ؓ stood up.

The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits was seen, and said: 'O God, enrich so-and-so and the family of so-and-so from Your bounty!' Indeed, if a man from that household died, he would leave as inheritance a thousand camels.

Umar ؓ said: 'Indeed, when the Muslims enter a land and are not settled there, it is hard for them to drink plain water, so they must have something to make it palatable.' They said: 'We have a drink we make from grapes, something resembling honey.' He said: 'Then bring it.' They brought it, and he ؓ began lifting it with his finger and stretching it like honey. He said: 'This is like the tar of camels.' Then he ؓ called for water and poured it over it, then he lowered it and drank from it, and his companions drank. He said: 'How good this is! So supply the Muslims with it.' They supplied them with it. It remained as long as Allah willed, then a man became numb from it. The Muslims rose and beat him with their sandals, saying: 'A drunkard!' The man said: 'Do not kill me, for by Allah I drank nothing but what Umar ؓ supplied us.' Umar ؓ stood among the people and said: 'O people, I am only a human being; I do not make lawful what is lawful, nor make unlawful what is unlawful. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken, and revelation was lifted.' Then Umar ؓ took hold of his garment and said: 'I declare my innocence before Allah, the Exalted, of making unlawful things lawful for you, so leave it, for I fear that people will enter into it deeply. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Every intoxicant is unlawful." So leave it.' Then Uthman ؓ used to make it, then Mu'awiyah ؓ used to drink the sweet (unfermented) kind.

✧ The delegation of 'Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ. When they wanted to leave, they said: 'You have memorized from the Prophet ﷺ everything you heard from him, so ask him about nabidh.' They went to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are in a feverish land, and nothing benefits us there except drink.' He ﷺ said: 'What is your drink?' They said: 'Nabidh.' He ﷺ said: 'In what do you drink it?' They said: 'In al-naqir.' He ﷺ said: 'Do not drink in al-naqir.' They left him, then said: 'By Allah, our people will not accept this from us.' So they returned and asked him, and he told them the same. Then they returned again, and he said to them: 'Do not drink in al-naqir, lest one of you strike his cousin a blow from which he remains lame until the Day of Resurrection.' He said: They laughed. He ﷺ said: 'What are you laughing at?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, we drank in a naqir of ours, and some of us rose against others, and this one struck that one a blow from which he remained lame until the Day of Resurrection.'

We have known what we were forbidden: we were forbidden from the gourd, the hollowed stump, the green jar, and the pitch-coated vessel. As for the gourd, we, the people of Thaqif in al-Ta'if, used to take the gourd and cut into it bunches of grapes, then bury it, then leave it until it fermented and died. As for the hollowed stump, the people of al-Yamamah used to hollow out the base of a palm tree, and mash fresh and dry dates in it, then leave it until it fermented and died. ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and mentioned the hadith, in which he said: 'Whoever has intercourse with a woman in her anus, or with a man, or with a boy, will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection more foul-smelling than a carcass; people will be harmed by him until he enters Hell. Allah will nullify his reward and will not accept from him any ransom or equivalent. He will be placed in a coffin of fire, and iron nails will be set upon him until those nails pierce into his interior. If a vein of his veins were placed upon four hundred nations, they would all die. He will be among the most severely punished people of Hell on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever commits adultery with a Muslim woman, or a non-Muslim, free or slave, three hundred thousand gates of Hell will be opened upon him in his grave, from which serpents, scorpions, and flames of fire will come out upon him. He will be punished with that fire until the Day of Resurrection, along with what he meets from those serpents and scorpions. He will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection with people harmed by his private parts; he will be known by that until he enters the Fire, and the people of the Fire will be harmed by him, in addition to the punishment they are in. Allah Almighty has forbidden the forbidden things, and no one is more jealous than Allah Almighty. Out of His jealousy He forbade indecencies and prescribed the legal punishments. Whoever shakes hands with a woman unlawfully will come on the Day of Resurrection with his hands chained to his neck, then he will be ordered to the Fire. If he jokes with her, he will be confined for every word he spoke to her in this world for a thousand years. If a woman complies with a man and he embraces her, or kisses her, or touches her, or jokes with her, or has intercourse with her, she bears the same sin as the man. If the man overpowers her, he bears his sin and her sin. Whoever falsely accuses chaste women, or a chaste woman, his deeds are nullified, and he will be flogged on the Day of Resurrection with seventy thousand lashes from before him and behind him, then he will be ordered to the Fire. Whoever drinks wine in this world, Allah Almighty will give him to drink from the venom of black snakes and the venom of scorpions, a drink from which the flesh of his face will fall into the vessel before he drinks it. When he drinks it, his flesh and skin will disintegrate like a carcass; the people of the gathering will be harmed by him, then he will be ordered to the Fire. Indeed, its drinker, its presser, its squeezer, its seller, its buyer, its carrier, the one to whom it is carried, and the one who consumes its price are equal in its sin and disgrace. No fasting, no Hajj, and no ʿUmrah will be accepted from him until he repents. If he dies before repenting from it, it is incumbent upon Allah Almighty to give him a drink of the pus of Hell for every gulp he drank in this world. Indeed, every intoxicant is wine, and every intoxicant is forbidden. Whoever procures between two men and a woman unlawfully, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him; his abode is the Fire, and evil is the destination. Whoever describes a woman to a man, mentioning her beauty and charm until he is tempted by her and obtains what he wants from her, will leave this world under Allah's wrath. Whoever Allah is angry with, the seven heavens and the seven earths are angry with him, and he bears the same sin as the one who committed it. We said: What if they repent and reform? He said: It is accepted from them, but not from the one who described her. Whoever commits adultery with a married woman, a valley of pus will gush from her private parts, a journey of five hundred years, harming the people of Hell with its foul odor. He will be among the most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is able to have a woman or a slave girl unlawfully but leaves her for the sake of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, out of fear of Him, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will protect him from the greatest terror, forbid him to the Fire, and admit him to Paradise. If he has intercourse with her unlawfully, Allah will forbid Paradise to him and admit him to the Fire.'

✧ I saw Ali ؓ when a man was brought to him. They said: He has stolen a camel. He said: I do not think you stole. He said: Yes. He said: Perhaps it was made to seem so to you? He said: Yes, I did steal. He said: Take him, Qanbar, tie his finger, light the fire, and call the butcher to cut. Then wait until I come. When he came, he said to him: Did you steal? He said: No, so he left him. They said: O Commander of the Faithful, why did you leave him when he had confessed to you? He said: I take him by his word and leave him by his word. Then Ali ؓ said: The Messenger of God ﷺ was brought a man who had stolen. He ordered his hand to be cut off, then he wept. We said: O Messenger of God, why do you weep? He ﷺ said: How can I not weep when my community has its hands cut off before your eyes? They said: O Messenger of God, could you not have pardoned him? He ﷺ said: That is an evil ruler who pardons the prescribed punishments. But pardon one another for the prescribed punishments among yourselves.

✧ A man from those branches came to Umar. He spread out his quiver, and a sheet fell out, and in it was: 'Convey to Abu Hafs a message: May you be ransomed by a trusted brother of my loincloth. Our camels, may God guide you, we were distracted from you during the time of the siege. Camels of Banu Sa'd b. Bakr and Aslam, or Juhaynah, or Ghifar. Ja'dah of Sulaym hobbles them, seeking the tithe of the pregnant ones. What young camels were found hobbled behind Sal' at the gathering of the carpenters?' Umar ؓ said: Call Ja'dah b. Sulaym. He called him and spoke with him, and ordered him to be flogged a hundred lashes while hobbled, and forbade him to enter upon a woman whose husband is absent.

Among those who cursed or reviled him was a man from Kufah. Uthman ؓ was harsher toward the Kufan than toward others. He said: O Kufan, do you revile me? As if threatening him. He said: Then he went to Madinah, and it was said to him—meaning to the Kufan—: Go to Talhah. Talhah ؓ went with him until he came to Uthman ؓ. Uthman ؓ said: By God, I will flog you a hundred lashes. Talhah said: By God, you will not flog him unless he is an adulterer. He said: I will deprive you of your stipend. Talhah ؓ said: O Kufan, God will provide for you.
