✧ Giving Choice to One Who Embraces Islam While Having More Than Four Wives Including Them

قَالَ الْحَارِثُ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ هُوَ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ:

« أَسْلَمَ غَيْلَانُ وَتَحْتَهُ عَشْرُ نِسْوَةٍ، فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يَخْتَارَ مِنْهُنَّ أَرْبَعًا، وَيُفَارِقَ سَائِرَهُنَّ. وَأَسْلَمَ صَفْوَانُ ؓ وَعِنْدَهُ ثَمَانِ نِسْوَةٍ، فَأَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يُمْسِكَ مِنْهُنَّ أَرْبَعًا، وَيُفَارِقَ سَائِرَهُنَّ

Translation

✧ Ghaylan embraced Islam while he had ten wives, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to choose four of them and separate from the rest. And Safwan ؓ embraced Islam while he had eight wives, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to keep four of them and separate from the rest.
