أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ الطَّائِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ
قَالَ لَهُ الْحَجَّاجُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسْأَلَنِي؟ فَقَالَ قَالَ سَمُرَةُ بْنُ جُنْدُبٍ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْمَسْأَلَةَ كَدٌّ يَكُدُّ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ وَجْهَهُ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَبْقَى عَلَى وَجْهِهِ وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْأَلَ ذَا سُلْطَانٍ أَوْ يَنْزِلَ بِهِ أَمْرٌ لَا يَجِدُ مِنْهُ بَدًّا»

✧ Al-Hajjaj said to him: 'What prevented you from asking me?' He replied: 'Samurah b. Jundub said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, this asking is a wound with which a man disfigures his face. So whoever wishes may preserve his face, and whoever wishes may leave it, except one who asks a person of authority, or who is faced with a matter from which he finds no alternative.""
