✧ “The best charity is that given out of surplus wealth, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. Let one of you begin with those he supports: his wife says, ‘Spend on me,’ and the mother of his child says, ‘To whom are you leaving me?’ and his slave says, ‘Feed me and employ me.’”

machine translationIsḥāq erred in abridging this hadith. The hadith is actually from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "Begin with those whom you support. Your wife says: 'Spend on me or divorce me.'" Then he interpreted this hadith.
