✧ I was with Qabisa b. al-Mukhariq when a group of his people sought his help for the marriage of a man of his people, but he refused to give them anything. So they went away from him. Kinanah said: I said to him: 'You are the chief of your people, and they came to you asking, yet you gave them nothing?' He said: 'As for this, I will not give anything, and I will tell you about that. I incurred a debt of reconciliation among my people, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and asked him to help me. He said: "Rather, we will bear it on your behalf, O Qabisa, and we will pay it to them from the camels of zakah." Then he said: "Indeed, asking is not lawful except for three: a man who has incurred a debt of reconciliation, so it becomes lawful for him until he pays it; or a man afflicted by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, until he obtains a means of livelihood or a sufficiency of livelihood; or a man stricken by poverty, and three men of sound judgment from his people testify that poverty has indeed befallen him, so asking becomes lawful for him until he obtains a means of livelihood or a sufficiency of livelihood. And asking in other than these cases is unlawful gain.""
