✧ I was with Qabisah b. al-Mukhariq when a group of his people sought his help for the marriage of a man from his people, but he refused to give them anything. They left him. Kinanah said: I said to him, “You are the chief of your people, and they came to you asking, but you gave them nothing.” He said, “As for this, I will not give anything. I will tell you about that: I incurred a blood money obligation among my people, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, asking him to help me. He said, ‘Rather we will carry it on your behalf, O Qabisah, and pay it to them from the zakah camels.’ Then he said, ‘Asking is not lawful except for three: a man who has incurred a blood money obligation, for whom it is lawful until he pays it; or a man struck by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, for whom it is lawful until he obtains a sufficiency of livelihood or a means of livelihood; or a man stricken by poverty, for whom three from among the wise of his people testify that asking is lawful for him, so it is lawful for him until he obtains a sufficiency of livelihood or a means of livelihood. Asking other than that, O Qabisah, is suht.’”
