أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّ جُبَيْرَ بْنَ مُطْعَمٍ أَخْبَرَهُ

أَنَّهُ جَاءَ هُوَ وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يُكَلِّمَانِهِ فِيمَا قَسَمَ مِنْ خُمْسِ خَيْبَرَ لِبَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ ابْنَيْ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ وَقَرَابَتُهُمْ مِثْلُ قَرَابَتِهِمْ فَقَالَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَسَمْتَ لِإِخْوَانِنَا بَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ وَبَنِي هَاشِمٍ ابْنَيْ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ وَلَمْ تُعْطِنَا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَمَا إِنَّ هَاشِمًا وَالْمُطَّلِبَ شَيْءٌ وَاحِدٌ» قَالَ جُبَيْرُ بْنُ مُطْعَمٍ وَلَمْ يَقْسِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِبَنِي عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ وَلَا لِبَنِي نَوْفَلٍ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْخُمْسِ شَيْئًا كَمَا قَسَمَ لِبَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَبَنِي الْمُطَّلِبِ

✧ He and ʿUthman b. ʿAffan came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to speak with him concerning what he had distributed of the khums of Khaybar to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, the two sons of ʿAbd Manaf, saying: their kinship is like our kinship. They said: O Messenger of Allah, you distributed to our brothers Banu al-Muttalib and Banu Hashim, the two sons of ʿAbd Manaf, but you gave us nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "Indeed, Hashim and al-Muttalib are one and the same." Jubayr b. Mutʿim said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not distribute any of that khums to Banu ʿAbd Shams or to Banu Nawfal, just as he distributed to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib.

    رواه الزهري عن سعيد غير واحد وهو الصواب وقد روي عن الزهري عن محمد بن جبير عن أبيه وحديث سعيد أصح ولا يحفظ هذا اللفظ عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلا من رواية جبير بن مطعم

    machine translationMore than one narrator related it from al-Zuhrī from Saʿīd, and that is the correct version. It has also been narrated from al-Zuhrī from Muḥammad b. Jubayr from his father, but the hadith of Saʿīd is more sound. This wording is not preserved from the Prophet ﷺ except through the narration of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim.

Isḥāq and others narrated it from al-Zuhrī from Ibn al-Musayyab from Jubayr b. Muṭʿim. Ibrāhīm b. Ismāʿīl b. Mujammaʿ differed from them, narrating it from al-Zuhrī from Muḥammad b. Jubayr from his father. Muṭarrif b. Māzin likewise said so, from Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī. The correct view is that of those who said it was from Ibn al-Musayyab.
