O Usama, upon you is fasting, for it draws one near to God, Mighty and Majestic. Nothing is more loved by God Most High than the breath of a fasting person, who has left food and drink for the sake of God Most High. If you are able for death to come to you while your belly is hungry and your liver is thirsty, then do so; for by that you will attain the nobility of the station in the Hereafter, and you will dwell with the prophets, and your spirit will rejoice at coming upon them, and the Compeller will bless you." [Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith, and in it:] "And know, O Usama, that the closest of people to God Most High on the Day of Resurrection is the one whose grief, thirst, and hunger in this world are most prolonged."

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us on the last day of Sha'ban and said: "O people, a blessed month has overshadowed you, in which there is a night better than a thousand months. God has made its fasting obligatory and its night prayer voluntary. Whoever performs a virtuous act voluntarily in it is like one who performs an obligatory act in other months, and whoever performs an obligatory act in it is like one who performs seventy obligatory acts. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Paradise. It is the month of consolation. It is a month in which the believer's provision is increased. Whoever provides iftar to a fasting person in it will have the reward of freeing a slave and forgiveness of his sins." It was said: "O Messenger of God, not all of us find what we can provide to break a fast." He ﷺ said: "God Most High gives this reward to whoever provides iftar to a fasting person with a sip of milk, a date, or a drink of water. And whoever satiates a fasting person will have forgiveness of his sins, and God, Mighty and Majestic, will give him a drink from my basin such that he will never thirst until he enters Paradise. He will have the like of the fasting person's reward without diminishing the fasting person's reward in any way. It is a month whose beginning is mercy, its middle forgiveness, and its end liberation from the Fire. And whoever lightens the burden of his servant in it, God will liberate him from the Fire."

✧ This month of Ramadan has come; the gates of heaven are opened in it, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. Whoever reaches Ramadan and is not forgiven in it, then when will he be forgiven?

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said when Ramadan approached: "Glory be to God! What are you about to face?" or "What is the person about to face?" three times. Umar ؓ said: "O Messenger of God, has revelation come down?" He ﷺ said: "No." He ؓ said: "Has an enemy appeared?" He said: "No." He said: "Then what is it?" He ﷺ said: "God Most High forgives all the people of the Qibla on the first night of the month of Ramadan." Then he looked at a man sitting before him who was shaking his head and saying: "Excellent! Excellent!" The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is as if your chest is troubled." He said: "No, but I remembered the hypocrites." He ﷺ said: "The hypocrite is the disbeliever, and the disbeliever has no share of that."

✧ My community has been given five characteristics in Ramadan that were not given to any community before them: the bad breath of a fasting person is more fragrant to God than the scent of musk; the angels seek forgiveness for them until they break their fast; God beautifies His Paradise every day and then says: "My fasting servants are about to cast off their burden and harm and come to you"; the rebellious devils are chained in it so they cannot reach what they reach in other months; and they are forgiven on the last night. It was said: "O Messenger of God, is it the Night of Decree?" He ﷺ said: "No, but the worker is only given his full wage when he finishes his work."

✧ He heard the Prophet ﷺ say when the month of Ramadan had begun: "If the servants knew what is in Ramadan, my community would wish that the whole year were Ramadan." A man from Khuza'ah said: "Tell us about it." He ﷺ said: "Paradise is adorned for Ramadan from the beginning of the year to the beginning of the year, until when the first day of Ramadan comes, a wind blows from beneath the Throne and rustles the leaves of Paradise. The houris with large eyes look at that and say: 'O Lord, grant us husbands from Your servants in this noble month who will be a delight to our eyes and whose eyes will be delighted by us.' There is no servant who fasts Ramadan except that he is married to a wife from the houris with large eyes in a tent of hollow pearl, as God Most High described: 'Houris, restrained in pavilions.' Each of them has seventy garments, no garment the same color as another, and she is given seventy kinds of perfume, no kind with the scent of another. Each of them has seventy couches of red ruby adorned with pearls, on each couch seventy beds with linings of brocade, and above the seventy beds seventy canopied couches. Each woman has a thousand maidservants for her needs and a thousand manservants, with each manservant a platter of gold containing a kind of food, the last morsel of which gives a pleasure not found in the first. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you wish, I will speak. He said: I only called you so that you would speak. He said: I only say what I think. He said: It is your opinion that I am asking about. I said: I have heard that Allah, exalted is He, often mentions seven. He mentioned the heavens as seven, and the earths as seven, until He said, among other things: And what the earth produces as seven. He said: Everything you have said I recognize except this: what do you mean by your saying, 'And what the earth produces as seven'? He said: Allah, exalted is He, says: Then We split the earth in fissures, and caused to grow within it grain and grapes and green fodder and olives and palm trees and gardens of dense foliage and fruits and grass, as provision for you. So the gardens are every dense garden, and the grass is what the earth produces that people do not eat.
