✧ This is a document that the Messenger of God ﷺ wrote for Amr b. Hazm regarding the obligatory dues of camels and sheep: For sheep, when they reach forty, one sheep; until they reach one hundred and twenty. If they exceed one hundred and twenty, then two sheep; until they reach two hundred. If they exceed two hundred, then three sheep; until they reach three hundred. If they exceed three hundred and are more than that, one sheep is counted for every hundred. For camels: in twenty-five, a bint makhad (a one-year-old female camel); if not found, then an ibn labun (a two-year-old male camel). When they reach thirty-six, then a bint labun (a two-year-old female camel). When they reach forty-six, then a hiqqah (a three-year-old female camel); until they reach sixty. Then a jadha'ah (a four-year-old female camel); until they reach seventy-five. Then two bint labun; until they reach ninety. If they exceed, then two hiqqah; up to one hundred and twenty. Then it returns to being counted from the first obligatory due of camels, a sheep; until they reach one hundred and twenty. If they are numerous, then in every fifty a hiqqah.

✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day when a man came with a platter of dates. He said: What is this? Is it sadaqa or a gift? The man said: Rather, sadaqa. He said: Then present it to the people. Al-Hasan ؓ was playing in the dirt before him, and he took a date and put it in his mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked, put his hand into the child's mouth, extracted the date and threw it away, saying: Indeed, the family of Muhammad does not eat sadaqa.

He rode to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in Tabuk and asked him about the affair of the slain woman. He said: "Pay her blood money to her heir." 'Adi ؓ said: "It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of God ﷺ on a red, crop-eared she-camel of his. He said: 'O people, know that there are three hands: the hand of God Most High is the highest, the hand of the giver is the middle, and the hand of the one given is the lowest. So abstain (from asking), even by bundles of firewood.' Then he raised his hands and said: 'O God, have I conveyed?'"
