✧ I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ, when he turned to Usama b. Zayd ؓ, say: "O Usama, upon you is the path to Paradise, and beware of being diverted from it." He said: "O Messenger of God, what is the quickest way to traverse that path?" He ﷺ said: "Thirst in the midday heat, and restraining the self from the pleasure of women. O Usama, upon you is fasting, for it draws one near to God, Mighty and Majestic. Nothing is more loved by God Most High than the breath of a fasting person, who has left food and drink for the sake of God Most High. If you are able for death to come to you while your belly is hungry and your liver is thirsty, then do so; for by that you will attain the nobility of the station in the Hereafter, and you will dwell with the prophets, and your spirit will rejoice at coming upon them, and the Compeller will bless you." [Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith, and in it:] "And know, O Usama, that the closest of people to God Most High on the Day of Resurrection is the one whose grief, thirst, and hunger in this world are most prolonged."
