Chain of narrators
- my father
✧ So I narrated that to Ibn 'Abbas ؓ, who said: 'What amazed you about that? 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ, when the elders among the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ were summoned, used to summon me with them, and he said: Do not speak until they speak. One day, or one night, he summoned us and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning the Night of Decree what you already know: Seek it in the last ten nights, on odd nights. Which odd night is it? A man said, expressing his own opinion: The ninth, the seventh, the fifth, the third. Then he said to me: What is wrong with you that you do not speak, O Ibn 'Abbas? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you wish, I will speak. He said: I only called you so that you would speak. He said: I only say what I think. He said: It is your opinion that I am asking about. I said: I have heard that Allah, exalted is He, often mentions seven. He mentioned the heavens as seven, and the earths as seven, until He said, among other things: And what the earth produces as seven. He said: Everything you have said I recognize except this: what do you mean by your saying, 'And what the earth produces as seven'? He said: Allah, exalted is He, says: Then We split the earth in fissures, and caused to grow within it grain and grapes and green fodder and olives and palm trees and gardens of dense foliage and fruits and grass, as provision for you. So the gardens are every dense garden, and the grass is what the earth produces that people do not eat. 'Umar ؓ said: Are you unable to say something like what this young man said, whose head has not yet fully grown? Then he said to me: I had forbidden you to speak with them; but when I call you, speak with them.
