✧ The Rebuke of Fasting Perpetually and of Singling Out a Specific Day or Month

وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، قَالَ:

سَأَلْتُ عَطَاءً عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَتَحَرَّى يَوْمًا يَصُومُهُ، فَقَالَ: كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَحَرَّى شَهْرًا، أَوْ يَوْمًا يَصُومُهُ، وَيَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ: مَنْ صَامَ الْأَبَدَ فَلَا صَامَ

Translation

✧ I asked Ata about a man who deliberately chooses a day to fast. He said: Ibn Abbas ؓ disliked singling out a month or a day to fast, and he used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever fasts perpetually, he has not fasted.'
